@katierazz Feels vindictive/punitive to want #PostOffceScandal decision makers to lose pensions/jobs/savings etc... but that is exactly what they did, knowingly, to thousands of staff. Innocent folks lost work, reputation, homes - so guilty people should too, surely? What are the odds?

@katierazz I absolutely felt and shared Ian Hislop’s rage and frustration on last night’s Peston. A lot of it deservedly directed at Jake Berry. Peston seemed to think it was a problem 🤷‍♀️

@BBCRosAtkins @katierazz But it did get away. They've been suffering for 20+yrs now & people have died in the meantime. Even the latest announcement won't be done till end of the year, when potentially more could have passed away. If not for one TV program the PO would be now walking away whistling

@MattFoot2 @katierazz Nick Davies had similar problems investigating the Phone-Hacking Scandal. If I remember right, he was thinking of giving it up, before getting a major breakthrough. ...and the rest, as they say...

@katierazz Good on this triumvirate powerhouse to bring the issues to the fore. Can anyone please tell me if it's true that the panel working out compensation for PO staff did not include anyone from the mental health profession? How, then, would 'experts' put a price on trauma, stress etc?

@katierazz We owe so much to proper investigative journalism, but here's the thing. Over and over, we keep hearing about "fake news" and the failed MSM, even from a US President, so much so that it has eroded our confidence in news media. Is this why we've ignored the PO story so long?

CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin: “We just said the [Washington Post] laid off about 30% of its staff and there’s a lot of people out there who said, Jeff’s super wealthy, he’s talked about this being a public trust, it’s something that he bought early on, how much do you care about that piece of it? Why lay people up? Why fire people? Why are you subsidizing the business…” Jeff Bezos: “Because The Post needs to be a profitable enterprise that stands on its own two feet.” “What I told them, when we were planning those layoffs, I didn’t pick who was going to be laid off or which departments. I said, follow the data. Follow the data. And I said, there’s one exception to this. Don’t follow the data on investigative reporting. The heart of The Post is investigative reporting, and guess what? Our newsroom today, even after the layoffs, is still larger than when we did Watergate and the Pentagon Papers. And we just won the Pulitzer Prize for public service, the most prestigious Pulitzer for our investigation in the DOGE.” “The Post is going to continue to be an important institution. In fact, it’s going to be a more important institution because of this financial discipline. It needs to be relevant to readers. It needs stand on its own two feet. I don’t want it to be a charity. It doesn’t need to be and it shouldn’t be.” Andrew Ross Sorkin: “Do you want to own it?” Jeff Bezos: “Yes, my vision is still to make sure The Post is a, when I bought The Post, it was very unprofitable when I brought it. The newsroom was even smaller than it is today. We turned it around in two years, it was profitable for six years. I put all that money back in The Post and grew the newsroom, so we’ve shrunk it back some now. But we haven’t shrunk it back to what it was when I bought it.”

This inquiry was initiated to address one of the most pressing issues of our time: the federal and state governments’ responses to COVID-19. The challenges we faced over the past few years highlighted severe shortcomings in our governments’ responses to COVID and weaknesses in our democracy. To ensure justice, accountability and financial compensation, it is imperative that a comprehensive Judicial Inquiry into the government’s handling of COVID-19 is called. This could take the form of a Senate Commission of Inquiry or a Royal Commission. Investigations that must be robust, independent and based on data and facts, with the power to subpoena witnesses and documentation. The handling of COVID affected us all in profound ways. To fully understand the scope of these effects and to prevent this happening again in the future, we need to establish an accurate and detailed timeline of events and associated facts. Placing the most up-to-date information on the record will uncover the truth behind the decisions made and their consequences. These are essential for restoring accountability and trust in governments, and health services and departments. We must make this issue a federal election matter, with the goal being to awaken the public with clear, understandable facts. The public needs to become aware of the magnitude of the problems we faced. The mishandling of this crisis is not a matter of minor errors. It involved significant failures that demand accountability and serious repercussions. That is the only way to restore trust in our medical systems and in our government systems and processes. This issue is far from over. We owe it to ourselves and to future generations—especially our children and grandchildren—to address these failings directly, clearly and bluntly. We must hold those responsible accountable and ensure that such lapses are never repeated.

#PostOfficeScandal Update by Metropolitan Police Commander Stephen Clayman👇 Transcript :- Operation Olympos is the criminal investigation into the Post Office IT Horizon scandal and is focused on the offences of perjury and perverting the course of justice. I am the Gold Commander and I have overall responsibility for this investigation. It is my role to agree the investigative strategy and ensure that it is supported with the right resourcing, finance and support from across forces, along with unblocking any issues that may sometimes arise along the way. I am supported by a Senior Investigating Officer who sets that investigative strategy and a team of investigators from forces across the country who are helping to deliver it. The team also has a very close working relationship with the Crown Prosecution Service who have been providing ongoing early investigative advice throughout. I know that the impact of the Post Office’s handling of the Horizon IT system has been widespread and devastating, affecting hundreds of sub-postmasters. Since January 2020, investigators began examining what has now become thousands of documents, both manually and with the help of some specialist software. It is important to stress that the investigation has always been running in parallel and independent of the public inquiry. However the material generated in that public inquiry and its final report will be key in terms of any evidence it provides for the criminal investigation. Given the scale and complexity of the investigation, this next phase is now an agreed national policing effort, coordinated by the Met and delivered by additional regional investigation teams situated across the country. This team numbers around 100 investigators, working under the direction of the Senior Investigating Officer, examining the evidence available, in line with the investigative strategy. It is important to be clear that we are not re-investigating all of the miscarriages of justice, rather we are looking at the actions of individuals across a number of cases – both criminal and civil. These individuals relate to Post Office investigators and prosecutors, the Post Office executive, along with staff and executives within Fujitsu. We have been giving a lot of thought as to how we communicate key updates to such a large group of people affected by Horizon, along with the understandable public interest in this case. This website is the primary interface where the investigation team can provide some general updates and I am sure you will understand that we will not be providing the names of those we are investigating and are limited in what we can say during the course of the investigation. However, I hope that it will be beneficial to provide some general updates periodically using the website, which will also contain details on how to get in touch with the investigation team. I want to assure all of you affected that we do not underestimate the seriousness of the task at hand and whilst it will take some time, we are determined to carry out a full investigation with independence, precision and integrity. Thank you. Commander Stephen Clayman If you wish to get in touch and provide evidence please do so here👇

Karoline Leavitt didn’t wait for the media to set the tone—she fired the first shot. Before a single question was asked, she went straight after The Washington Post for what she called a dishonest and manipulative headline on the fentanyl crisis. Their headline: “The mysterious drop in fentanyl seizures on the U.S.-Mexico border.” Leavitt called it what it was: spin. “How is this mysterious?” she asked. “There is no mystery about why there is a decrease in fentanyl coming into the United States!” She pointed directly to the administration’s border policies and cooperation with Mexico as the reason for the decline. “This administration’s strong border policies are the reason there has been a decrease in fentanyl trafficking,” she said. “His strengthened relationship with Mexican President Sheinbaum and all of the measures he has been taking to deter illegal human and drug trafficking at our United States southern border is the reason for plummeting fentanyl seizures at the U.S. Border.” But the issue wasn’t just the headline. It was what Leavitt described as intentional narrative engineering. “This is clearly trying to intentionally manipulate the minds of Americans, and I think the American people understand why there has been fentanyl drop.” And when the Post ignored the administration’s full explanation? “Our office responded to this inquiry, we provided a whole host of the reasons that fentanyl seizures have dropped at the southern border, and The Washington Post refused to run them,” she said. “And that’s despicable.”
