Cool thing I noticed right now whilst driving in China: I use Amap for navigation (the Chinese equivalent of Google Maps or Waze), which itself uses Beidou as a satellite navigation system. And the thing is so precise it shows you on which lane you are on the highway!

近日，北斗卫星系统被联合国认证为全球卫星导航核心供应商。这一事件标志着中美在导航领域的较量又升级了一个档次。在美国不断封堵、制裁下，中国北斗导航系统不仅在137个国家和地区得到应用。在非洲，北斗系统建立了30多个基站，在手机市场，2.88亿部手机内置北斗芯片。在定位精度上，北斗比美国的GPS系统高一个等级。北斗通过信号构建起全球合作网络，为城市建设、农业监测、跨海物流提供支持。其商业价值凸显。最新量产的导航芯片价格已经压到六块钱，比十年前便宜了三十多倍，现在市面上九成八的智能手机都装着这种白菜价芯片。老挝偏远山村最近用上了直连卫星的手机服务，遇到山洪暴发能直接发定位求救，救援队根据信号三分钟就能锁定受困位置。泰国码头用北斗系统管理货轮停靠，装卸效率比原来快了两倍，每年光燃油费就能省下三千万。马来西亚刚签了合作协议，准备在橡胶园里装五千台北斗传感器，实时监测土壤变化指导施肥。国内车企新出的自动驾驶系统全部改用北斗定位，夜间隧道里的误差不超过半个手掌宽。Recently, the Beidou satellite system has been certified by the United Nations as a core global satellite navigation provider. This event marks an escalation in the competition between China and the United States in the navigation field. Despite continuous blockades and sanctions from the U.S., China's Beidou Navigation System has been adopted in 137 countries and regions. In Africa, Beidou has established over 30 base stations. In the mobile phone market, 288 million handsets are equipped with built-in Beidou chips. In terms of positioning accuracy, Beidou outperforms the U.S. GPS system by one level. Beidou has built a global cooperation network through its signals, providing support for urban construction, agricultural monitoring, and cross-sea logistics, with its commercial value becoming increasingly prominent. The price of the latest mass-produced navigation chips has been reduced to 6 RMB, more than 30 times cheaper than a decade ago. Now, 98% of smartphones on the market are equipped with these "dirt-cheap" chips. In a remote mountain village in Laos, residents have recently started using satellite-direct mobile phone services. In case of flash floods, they can directly send location-based distress signals, and rescue teams can lock the trapped position within three minutes based on the signals. A Thai port uses the Beidou system to manage cargo ship berthing, doubling the loading and unloading efficiency and saving 30 million RMB in fuel costs annually. Malaysia has just signed a cooperation agreement to install 5,000 Beidou sensors in rubber plantations to monitor soil changes in real time and guide fertilization. All newly launched autonomous driving systems of domestic automakers have switched to Beidou positioning, with errors in nighttime tunnels no more than the width of half a palm.
