Even as Gus calmly addresses Hector, the viewer can almost taste the decades’ worth of blood feud between these two men. For all that Hector is old and frail, his eyes seem to burn right through Gus, and the tension in this scene is practically a character itself. It’s a fittingly exciting way to introduce Gus’s toxic relationship with both Don Eladio and the cartel in general, as well as his precarious position in the system. Gus is patient, calculating, and willing to wait before delivering a well-timed bullet to the skull. All of that is on full display in this scene, which serves as a masterclass in dramatic tension. As such, it’s a huge highlight of the series in general and a must-see for any Breaking Bad fan.
