The EU has never been some great socialist project. Its centre of gravity has overwhelmingly sat with the centre-right, Christian Democrats, liberals, technocrats and market managers. It has never had a solid left-wing majority driving it in the interests of workers, public ownership or democratic socialism. And let’s not rewrite history on Thatcher either. Thatcher campaigned hard to keep Britain in the EEC in the 1975 referendum. She was not some lifelong Eurosceptic heroine. She backed membership when it suited the free-market project and when the EEC looked like a useful vehicle for deregulation, competition and smashing the old post-war settlement. Only later, when she grasped the direction of political integration and the loss of national sovereignty, did she make the Bruges speech and turn against the project’s federal ambitions. Meanwhile, the Tory Party carried on building the very thing many of them now pretend to have opposed all along. John Major took Britain into the European Union through Maastricht. He signed away more sovereignty, deepened the treaty structure, and helped lock Britain further into the EU machine. So the idea that the EU was some left-wing internationalist paradise betrayed by Brexit is nonsense. It was shaped by conservatives, liberals and corporate interests from the start. Please, do not forget that Ukraine merits it because it has paid more than any other European country for its right to be free, independent, and European. This right is not only for Ukraine. It is also the right of other nations to be independent from Russia. The future of Europe – free, united and in peace – is being decided in our defense. That shows how unique our situation is. I’m grateful to everyone who recognizes this and who takes the necessary steps to show that Europe truly values and supports it.
