Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was present in Washington, D.C., to witness the signing of a peace agreement between President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC, an event orchestrated under the auspices of the U.S. and facilitated by President Donald Trump. In his capacity as a senior mediator, Kenyatta coordinated the negotiations of the East African Community Nairobi Process and subsequent discussions led by the United States, guiding deliberations on troop withdrawals, the disarmament of armed groups, and the alignment of regional peace initiatives.

#DRC #USA Ms. Sarah Troutman (Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs in DC) is answering questions from Congresswomen and -men at the hearing on the Peace Process in the DRC and the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the DRC and Rwanda. We are surprised to hear Ms. Troutman say that they have been working with civil society on the ground, while the Catholic Church (via CENCO-ECC) and other major civil society organizations have not been included in this process from the outset. Civil society organizations from conflict-affected areas are also not involved in this process. This is the major reason why the peace deal brokered by the USA has not brought peace to eastern DRC. For the DRC Peace Agreement and the Strategic Partnership Agreement with both the USA and Rwanda to be effective and meaningful, the Congolese population at the forefront of the conflicts must be involved in all stages of the process. In his briefing for the upcoming joint SADC-EAC summit, Uhuru Kenyatta, the facilitator of the Nairobi process, says that only close coordination between the Luanda and Nairobi processes can bring the DRC crisis to an end. Ten months ago, in May 2024, in an interview with Jeune Afrique, President Kagame asked that the two processes be brought closer together instead of being run separately and, sometimes, in different directions. He also called for a meeting of EAC and SADC leaders to discuss and coordinate their response to the DRC, rather than allowing Tshisekedi to create divisions within and between the regions. One can't help wondering how many lives would have been spared if SADC and EAC leaders had responded positively and earlier to Kagame's proposals.
