The Proportional Editing tool is super useful for creating overlapping cables and wires - especially when using the 'Connected Only' Toggle. It's a really good method to create coil springs where the ends compress together but the mid-section has a lot of space.

Sigh, proportional editing is useful to a point but needs an overhaul in Blender. Doesn't respect selections and being screen based is fairly useless in a lot of situations.
