The Qiantang River creates dune-like wave patterns when powerful tidal bores collide with opposing currents. It looks like desert sand but it’s all water.

Such a weird natural phenomenon 🤨

Nature is truly remarkable. The way opposing currents shape the water into patterns resembling desert dunes is a powerful reminder of how fascinating and unpredictable our planet can be.

Beautiful, and brutal for structures. Bores like this hit bridge piers and sea walls with every big tide, and the scour they dig at the base is invisible from the surface. Only a dive or sonar survey shows it.
