Peter Thiel on how to think about the future “What you end up doing when you think of the future as indefinite is you pick a job that will be good on your resume because it will then lead to a different job later on.” Instead of viewing the future as indefinite, Thiel suggests that the students in the audience think of the future on three horizons: short term, medium term, and long term. And he defines them as follows: 1. Short term = Are you going to be happy and will you be learning a lot? 2. Medium term = How good is it on your resume? 3. Long term = Are you working on something important or meaningful? “I think we are in a skewed world where we overweight the medium term, and we underweight some combination of the short term and the long term.” Thiel recommends recalibrating it to: “Focus on some combination of short term and long term. People with externally rotated feet or knee valgus look strange to me. It’s something I can’t not notice. I see it immediately. One of the first things I observe about someone is how they walk and stand. One day people will realize that goata is not only more functional and robust, but also much more aesthetic. 🦵 Recovery Update: 2.5 Months Later It’s now been two and a half months since I badly twisted my knee during the summer holidays. At first, I thought it would be a minor setback—just a week or so of rest. But it turned out to be more serious, and I ended up needing surgery. Last Sunday marked nearly one month since the operation. I had a follow-up with the surgeon who said things are healing nicely and gave me the green light to start putting weight on my left leg and begin knee-bending exercises. This morning was my first physiotherapy session at the hospital—and wow, what an experience! The doctor strapped my leg into a machine that bends and straightens your knee for you. He set it to 70 degrees (which is as far as I can bend it for now), turned it on, handed me a panic button, and said “see you in an hour!” 😳 Every 50 seconds it bent to the limit. The pain was intense, but I kept going. When the doctor came back to check on me, I said (very British) “I’m fine.” So, naturally, he turned it up! 😩 Eventually, he noticed the pain in my face and dialled it back to 72 degrees. Small mercies! But the real pain came next—when he manually tried to bend my knee further. I actually cried out. He told me my knee is still very stiff and that full recovery might take many months. He’s given me some exercises to do at home, and I’m back in the “torture chamber” again next Thursday. Not looking forward to it—but I know this is the path to recovery. 🎯 My goal? To be walking (with a limp and a stick) in time for the Royal Blossom train trip to Hua Hin on 12 July. Whether I’ll manage to get up the train steps is another story… let’s see! #Thailand

One thing that people have spoken of everywhere we went is the toll this war is beginning to take on the people of Ukraine in PTSD and other mental health conditions. We’re only just beginning to grasp the likely scale of it – and how long-lasting the effects may be. While it was wonderful to see people in Britain rallying with support and hospitality for Ukrainians in the first phase of this war, we must now recognise that we need to be in this for the long haul, that’s one of the messages I will take away with me. The whole pattern of life and support is changing from immediate crisis to long-term help. This is not likely to stop soon. Read more:

Here is an interesting view of the operational aspects of the Beijing robotic half marathon: - battery swap (obvious), - liquid cooled, with dry ice used as the cooling source, - and looks like liberal use of coolant on hip and knee joints as well. I didn't realize how much cooling was an issue - is it the Jetson / sensors? Or is it the actuators? Makes me thinking investing in cooling is worthwhile outside the data center. Cardano Scales by Measuring First The Cardano Leios team has released a mempool visualiser, and it is a solid piece of work. As throughput increases, the mempool becomes critical infrastructure. Transaction propagation, ordering behaviour, and fragmentation effects start to matter. This visualiser sits alongside the Leios simulation framework and renders trace data so researchers can replay scenarios, inspect how mempool state evolves across nodes, and study behaviour under different network and protocol conditions. This is about understanding system behaviour before it reaches users. Instrumenting the protocol, observing edge cases early, and using evidence to guide design decisions as Leios progresses toward a high throughput Cardano. This has long been Cardano’s approach. Credit to the Leios team again. Open, inspectable tooling like this is exactly what responsible scaling looks like, and it gives the community real visibility into how the protocol is being developed.
