Your philosophy swings far closer to the New Testament than you may realize. The physical realities of the Old Testament pointed to the spiritual truths of the New. In other words “the promise land” pointed to and was fulfilled in Jesus. So you’re exactly right…it’s a people NOT a place. There is NOWHERE in the NT which speaks of a future restoration of the people to the land nor is there a rebuilt physical temple. The Kingdom of God is now spiritual and in us. This is why the author of Hebrews could write 2000 years ago (in the present tense) “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering,” —Heb 12:22
