The Real Reason Retaining Walls Fail Isn't Concrete.

Hmm Sometimes, over-engineering is a bad thing.

Or simply design it properly from the start: assume fully saturated soil, include surcharge loads, apply load factors, and build in a solid factor of safety.

Lack of a proper base is what would cause that wall to fall over. Definitely not the concrete exploding half way up.

This AI video put the landscape fabric on the wrong side of the gravel fill.

Wrong : Footings to retain water should be wide base with heavy rebar and angled so water below flows away .. Also, heavy wide base .

STOP. Roman concrete still stands today. IN WATER... The problem IS the concrete. Portland concrete is trash and not meant to last. ESPECIALLY in this type of use. You would get a better result just by mixing sand, ash and vinegar ingredients.

Weep holes

Just use Rankine’s method to calculate the horizontal stress on the retaining wall.

That wall would fail due to a lack of heel dominance. A key probably wouldn’t hurt either.

Barbacanes !

gravel doesn't compact

This is why draining systems are installed around the structures, to eliminate water build up.

Hangi çağda yaşıyorsunuz Horasan harcı var yüzyıllardır sarniclarda su tutuyor siz hala betona su geçmesin diye uğraşıyorsunuz 3-5 bin lira verip ilaçlı beton aranda yok sonra o oldu bu oldu

日本ではこの手の擁壁には水の抜け道になる穴を最初から開けてるのでこんな壊れ方はしませんよ

Why design a retaining wall, without weep holes

この擁壁の形状はあり得ないし、この擁壁がせん断破壊するのもあり得ない。間違いなく転倒するし、滑動抵抗力もない。

Did everyone notice this? Automatic delivery

I understand more than most how important it is to have this done right the first time. The city made me redo someone else’s shitty work 2 months after I got my first house.

Đây là cách tường bê tông hoạt động hả?

👀

Its hydrostatic pressure. Water weighs less than soil. It’s the pore pressure built up in the soils not the weight of the water

It is the first what is full of water.

Concrete is indeed the problem

@sirfolajomi

Yes , drainage is key !!!

The collapse begins when the tensile strength provided by the steel to the concrete weakens. When Water moisture penetrates inside and reaches the rebar, the steel begins to rust. And When the tensile factor weakens, the concrete's compressive factor becomes weaker as well

Always address water pressure when designing retaining walls

That is the wrong footing for a retaining wall

These are fascinating .Decades of driving through “the gorge” on I-40 . Tennessee and North Carolina . Always thought freeze thaw determined how long the repairs would last .
