"Every 10 years, we have a census in our country, in which every single person living in India is recorded and their details are taken down. In that, for the last 70 years, we have always asked the religion of the head of the household. We have always asked language. We have always asked caste category, SC, ST or others. No fixed list or tick boxes 👀 This is the same method used in the 2011 Socio-Economic and Caste Census, which threw up over 46 lakh distinct “caste names” (Gupta, Agarwal and countless variants of the same caste). Everyone outside SC/ST falls into a single “Other” bucket. If this format stays, data on OBC & General categories could once again get LOST in the noise of endless name variants.
