“On the day of swearing in of Obasanjo we didn’t have a copy of the constitution. I didn’t know who was printing it, and my ministry was supposed to pay for the printing. Obasanjo was sworn in on a constitution that has not been read by anybody. Abdulsalami Gave Us 1999 Constitution Overnight – No Debate, No Draft.”

The RSS believes that India is one idea and we believe that India is a multiplicity of ideas. We believe that everybody should be allowed to participate, allowed to dream, and given space regardless of their caste, language, religion, tradition or history. This is the fight, and the fight was crystallised in the election when millions of people in India clearly understood that the Prime Minister of India was attacking the Constitution of India. Every single word that I have said to you is in the Constitution. The foundation of modern India is the Constitution. What people understood in the election clearly, and I saw it happening when I used to raise the Constitution, people understood what I was saying. They were saying that the BJP is attacking our tradition, attacking our language, attacking our states, attacking our histories. Most importantly, what they understood was that anybody who is attacking the Constitution of India is also attacking our religious tradition. That is why in my first speech in Parliament you must have noticed when I describe Abhayamudra, the fact that this is a symbol of fearlessness and it is present in every single Indian religion. When I was saying this, the BJP could not stand it. They don't understand, and we are going to make them understand. The other thing that happened was that the fear of the BJP vanished. We saw that immediately, within minutes of the election result, nobody in India was scared of the BJP or the Prime Minister of India. So these are huge achievements, not of Rahul Gandhi or the Congress party. We are peripheral. These are huge achievements of the people of India who realised democracy, of the people of India who realised that we are not going to accept an attack on our Constitution. ACLU National Executive Director Anthony Romero: If you are born in the USA, you are an American citizen. I was especially gratified that Trump was sitting a mere 6 feet away from me, and I hope he was schooled in the importance of birthright citizenship. I am confident that we will win this case and that the future of this country will be determined by our Constitution and not by the whim of a president who wishes to wipe away hundreds of years of precedent.

Remember, that didn’t used to be considered impossible. We’ve had about 30 of them. Some of the things we take for granted as core to the Constitution—it’s right in there, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment—the word “amendment” means it wasn’t even in the original text. Amendments have always been a critically important part of how our Constitution is supposed to work. We just forgot about it. We amended our Constitution for prohibition. We changed our Constitution so you couldn’t have a beer. And then we thought that’s a bad idea, and we changed it back. Don’t tell me we can’t change the Constitution to get money out of politics.

In the documentary Democrats, Douglas Mwonzora calmly reminds the room that a constitution is not a favor from power it is a restraint on it. Even when facing Robert Mugabe, the demands were clear: the law must stand above men. Whatever politics say today, history records this Mwonzora has always been a constitutionalist. He fought for the constitution when it was hardest to demand it.

The then government in 1995 changed it completely. In 2013, a lot of amendments were made to the act. So, now if an amendment is taking place, it does not need to be taken negatively. We should trust the government, it is dedicated to 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas'... As per the reports, it seems that there are going to be around 32 amendments in the act. If it is about registration with the Collector or a judicial inquiry, then why should one have a problem with it? In 2013, it was amended that the government should map it every 10 years... This is not an interference in the Shariat and it does not decrease the power of the Waqf..."
