The first thing Russia does after occupying our territories is destroy all the children’s books in Ukrainian, including Ukraine’s history books. This all happened centuries ago when Russia tried to forbid the Ukrainian language, so it can later be said that it never existed.

The Russian and Ukrainian languages have completely different origins. The Russian language developed from Bulgarian at a time when Ukrainian existed alongside Bulgarian, which was then known as Church Slavonic.

In this footage, Grigory Yavlinsky, the future leader of Yabloko, lays out his vision for expanding Ukrainian influence inside Russia: Ukrainian schools, textbooks from Ukraine, Ukrainian-language radio and TV, cultural centers. (Thanks, but no thanks) Earlier this month, Yabloko was kept off the ballot in an upcoming election. Why? Because thirty-three years later, Yavlinsky is still championing Ukraine - but inside Russia!
