But I’ve always found it more interesting how communism got people to murder others who were similar to themselves. We spend a lot of time on the horrors of racism and ethnic hatred. But the deadliest ideology in history involved killing people identical to yourself. It was framed in high-minded terms—class struggle, rich versus poor, capitalists versus workers. But in reality, it was just people killing slightly better-off peasants, educated people killing other educated people. Pol Pot, educated in Paris, ordered the execution of people with the same background as his own.
