A majestic tigress cools off in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu, reminding us that conservation, when pursued with determination, delivers results India’s tiger population has grown from 1,411 in 2006 to an estimated 3,682 in 2022, a remarkable journey built on decades of policy, science, sustained protection, dedicated frontline staff and the support of communities living alongside tiger landscapes. Tamil Nadu has been an important part of this journey, with its tiger population increasing from 264 in 2018 to 306 in 2022 across a landscape anchored by five Tiger Reserves. As the 6th cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation, the world’s largest wildlife monitoring exercise gets underway in 2026, we look forward to new milestones and renewed hope for the future of our tigers. #TNForest Video Supriya Sahu IAS

Imagine a world without elephants. Imagine forests without them. They would never be as rich, resilient and alive as they are when elephants roam through them as ecosystem engineers ! India is so lucky to have elephants. The latest Wildlife Institute of India DNA-based assessment estimates 22,446 wild elephants in India, meaning India is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining wild Asian elephants. Within India, the Western Ghats are the great elephant stronghold. Karnataka (6,013), Tamil Nadu (3,136) and Kerala (2,785) together have 11,934 elephants, more than 53% of India’s entire estimated population. Tamil Nadu has the third-highest elephant population in the country, after Karnataka and Assam. India’s top five elephant states are: Karnataka 6,013 | Assam 4,159 | Tamil Nadu 3,136 | Kerala 2,785 | Uttarakhand 1,792. Together they account for nearly 80% of India’s elephants. This #WorldElephantDay, we must resolve to do everything we can to conserve elephants #worldElephantDay2026 #elephants #elephantday Brilliant capture Pravin Shanmughanandam

This is a video shared by a person who was at the venue where Modi addressed the NRI population in Kuwait. As of 2023, there are around 10,00,726 Indians in Kuwait, including Indian expatriates and Kuwaiti citizens of Indian descent. The majority of these Indians come from the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Modi was delighted to note that some of them had actually taken the pain to listen to his address at the venue.

A memorable day for us at the TN Forest Department as we initiate the Tamil Nadu Raptor Research Foundation (TNRRF) at the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation at Chennai, a first of its kind in India. Raptors are the tigers and leopards in the kingdom of birds as apex predators and vital indicators of ecosystem health. Tamil Nadu hosts 70+ raptor species, including Crested Serpent Eagle, Black Kite, Shikra, Short-toed Snake Eagle etc. Sadly many are endangered. It is time to bring back these majestic birds to their full glory. The Foundation will be a gamechanger in conserving Raptors through research, mapping habitats and migration routes, population estimation & habitat restoration etc #Raptors #WildlifeConservation #TNForest #Biodiversity #raptorsresearchfoundation

A journey of a lifetime begins today! Fifteen mahouts and cavadies from the Mudumalai and Anamalai Tiger Reserves in Tamil Nadu have boarded their first-ever international flight to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang, Thailand. The objective of this visit is to learn and exchange best practices in elephant management and welfare. This marks the second batch to undertake this transformative journey, following the first group of 13 who visited TECC in 2023. This unique initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department’s broader vision to professionalise elephant care by blending the traditional tribal wisdom of our mahouts with modern global standards. The visiting team comprises mahouts, cavadies, veterinary experts, forest rangers, and department officials. We wish our team a meaningful and empowering experience. #MahoutsOfTamilNadu #WildlifeConservation #Theppakadu #Kozhikamuthi #TNForest

Big big news in wildlife conservation ! The Population estimation of Dugongs undertaken by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in TN with collaboration with the Forest Department, has estimated a total population of 270 dugongs along the Tamil Nadu coast including 158 dugongs in Palk Bay and 112 dugongs in the Gulf of Mannar. The findings indicate that the dugong population in Tamil Nadu is stable and doing well. Together, Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar now represent the largest viable dugong population in India. This is largely attributed to the implementation of the Dugong Recovery Programme by WII supported through CAMPA, along with the proactive and sustained conservation efforts of the TN Forest Department including community engagement to protect Dugongs. Importantly, the confirmed presence of mother calf pairs provides evidence of active breeding. The report also highlights the Notification of the Dugong Conservation Reserve in Palk Bay, covering 448 km² of core dugong habitat by GOTN, as a significant milestone towards long-term protection of the species. We are setting up India’s first Dugong Conservation Centre at Manora in Thanjavur District, at a cost of Rs 40.94 crore with World Bank Group This centre will serve as a state-of-the-art hub for dugong research, awareness generation, and community participation.
