I remember talking to Gawin about how I still wasn't confident that I could do it. I already knew that no matter what, I was going to have to get on that stage. But at that time, I felt like I didn't really belong there. Maybe because I came from an acting background. 🐻: I also had a lot of worries. A lot of my friends are artists, like Timethai and P'Pae, who are musicians. They've spent years building up their experience. Even Gawin himself has been playing music since he was a teenager, since he was a kid. 🐻: But for me, I had only recently started trying and learning. A lot of the time, it didn't feel natural. It wasn't something I could just do right away. I had to practice, practice, and practice again and agian. When I first started taking lessons, there were still times when I'd sing off key or dance out of rhythm. So I felt like everything was moving so slowly. I was starting late, after all. 🐻: But as I kept practicing more and more, I gradually became more confident. Still, there was always a small part of me that wondered, because I'd never performed on a big stage before. I didn't know what it would be like. Would I be able to handle the nerves? What if I made a mistake? What would happen then? 🐻: It took time. In the end, my friends and the people close to me helped me realize that it was all just part of the experience. Whatever is going to happen will happen. FMC JABI, ABUJA, A HUGE MESS OF A HOSPITAL The Federal Medical Center (FMC), Jabi, is supposed to be the best government hospital in the FCT, but it is today a huge mess. Some years ago, my wife was ill and was admitted to that hospital, and I did a post about my experiences there then. It was at least ok. Four years ago, we had our son at that same hospital. My experience weren't that satisfactory, but at least, if you look at Nigeria, it was also ok. A lot of the staff were very badly behaved. We paid for a private ward but didn't get most of the services that came with it. I had to run around the hospital for one week myself even when we were supposed to get someone do all that for us as part of the package. But in all, I wasn't bothered because I have my son. Over the years, I have watched that hospital deteriorate from 'BAD to WORSE'. For a start, the compound is so small. Those who planned it didn't plan with the population of Nigeria in mind, something very common in our country. Recently, they have been squeezing structures in every corner that the hospital is now shocking. But this is not even the issue. I have never heard of it before. My wife demanded she should be discharged. They tried to discourage it, but she insisted. She was asked to sign, which she did. We drove to Sahad Hospital, and I was really impressed. The whole environment is very neat and clean. A big hospital with a lot of parking spaces. It didn't end there. While it cost 13k to register at the FMC, which is a government hospital, it cost just 3k to register at Sahad. She was put in a bed immediately with AC and even ceiling fans working. They attended to her immediately. Their services are quite cheaper and better than the FMC. Of course, there are also a couple of issues with staff conduct, but the FMC is also worse in that regard. She was transferred to the female ward on Tuesday, and it is still the same thing, clean beds, clean rooms, 24/7 electricity, fan, and AC. In all these, i wasn't surprised. A country where the minister of health claims his ministry only got N36m so far from the 2025 budget in 2026, such shouldn't bother you. The country is sinking into debt by the day, yet all the infrastructures are decaying. They don't care about the people, so they can't care about the hospitals they and their families don't use. FMC JABI, ABUJA, A HUGE MESS OF A HOSPITAL The Federal Medical Center (FMC), Jabi, is supposed to be the best government hospital in the FCT, but it is today a huge mess. Some years ago, my wife was ill and was admitted to that hospital, and I did a post about my experiences there then. It was at least ok. Four years ago, we had our son at that same hospital. My experience weren't that satisfactory, but at least, if you look at Nigeria, it was also ok. A lot of the staff were very badly behaved. We paid for a private ward but didn't get most of the services that came with it. I had to run around the hospital for one week myself even when we were supposed to get someone do all that for us as part of the package. But in all, I wasn't bothered because I have my son. Over the years, I have watched that hospital deteriorate from 'BAD to WORSE'. For a start, the compound is so small. Those who planned it didn't plan with the population of Nigeria in mind, something very common in our country. Recently, they have been squeezing structures in every corner that the hospital is now shocking. But this is not even the issue. Two decades ago when I visited USA for the first time, my relative asked me what I wanted to do the first evening after I landed. Being from the area of Marketing, having analysed many case studies on ‘Walmart’, I asked her if she could take me to Walmart as I wanted to understand supermarket buying behaviour. At that time in India, we did not have supermarkets. Everything was a cultural shock for me then. How people greeted each other, the space between two customers in a line, polite courtesies or customer citizenship behaviour were very new concepts for me to understand. As I walked out of Walmart and was about to cross the road to go to the parking lot, I saw a car coming up so I waited for it to cross while looking down at my phone. A few seconds later the car honked. I looked up and the driver gestured for me to cross the road. I was surprised. My relative said, ‘move so that he can drive’. Another shocker - ‘the right of way is of the pedestrian here?!’ Anyways, I learnt so much in the few months I stayed in USA studying and working. When I came back to India, everything about our behaviour towards each other rattled me until a few days later when I got back to being how we usually are here. But somethings stayed with me for life. The most important one is that - always give way to others. 1-2 seconds isn’t going to change anything so just do it. Today when someone gives me way on road or lets me pass through the door first, I make it a point to give them a big smile, wave and say ‘thank you’. It just gives such a good feeling and warms my heart that someone put me first and chose to go second. But mostly when I give way on road or elsewhere, I don’t receive the same smile in return and hence when I get one, it just makes my day! I really wish we all were kinder to each other in public spaces. Everyone is carrying their own emotional baggage, problems in life, trials and tribulations, that such small joys, smiles and love can just help us tide over bigger issues that plague us much easily. Some Big Numbers To Get Excited About Regular readers will know I often write of frustration at not moving fast enough. This mission I am on is really hard and sometimes it can seem impossibly big when I am down in the weeds dealing with dog issues on a daily basis. I have to say though that writing this tonight and looking through some numbers I feel for the first time that I am starting to make some large scale progress… A Second Island 🌴🥥 I live and help the dogs on the island of Koh Samui. There is an island of equal size called Koh Phangan just across the water. You probably have heard of it as the home of the world famous Full Moon Party. They have a similar problem with street dogs. Since the the 1st May I have starting funding a wonderful foundation called PACS to sterilise dogs there. They are starting with 50 this month. This is going to stop 1000s of future puppies. A big step. 90,000 Meals Served in 2023 So Far 🥘👨‍🍳 The cooking never stops. The dogs are all starting to benefit from a consistent and healthy meal per day. All the food is prepared in a central kitchen and handed out to volunteers to feed their dogs. With 5000 meals served per week around the island it blows my mind that soon we will serve the 100,000th wholesome plate of food in 2023. It wasn’t that long ago I was driving around on my moped with a 10kg bag of dry food feeding a paltry 20 dogs per day on my own. 7 Puppies Re-Homed 🐶🏠 In the last couple of weeks there have been 25-30 puppies show up. It can be incredibly tough to find them homes but thanks to a great Thai lady I have been able to get 7 into their forever homes around the country. It has involved a lot of vet visits, 1000kms of travel and lots of expense but that is 7 dogs who have a future now who wouldn’t have made it otherwise. 2 Miracles For Lady 🙏😊 The first miracle for Lady was the fact that she got off the street and was able to start walking a little again despite her two broken hips. We’ve been getting her a lot of treatment and she is thriving. Her 2nd miracle was when a lovely newly retired gentleman called Jamie spotted her and offered Lady a forever home to live out her life right here on the island. Nobody usually wants old and sick dogs so this incredibly selfless act is the huge slice of luck that Lady deserved after all the suffering she has endured. The Best Day Of Tina’s Life 🐕🥰 Tina was used for breeding puppies. We all saw the horrendous state she was in when she was rescued. Last week she was well enough to be sterilised so as she never has to have another puppy in her life again. It might seem like a small footnote in the bigger scheme of things but it was a moment of closure for this wonderful lady who has suffered so much. She can now just focus on being a dog for for the first time in her life and sharing all the love she has to give. Tina was the 521st dog I have sterilised since starting. King Whacker Of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✈️ Whacker is a very special dog who was one of the first arrivals back in November. Someone had tried to kill him with a pick axe. After recovering he turned into a true gent and is the big boss at the land. I promised he would never have to go back on the streets and this week after a process to find him the right home he got the news that he will be heading to Glasgow. Long live Whacker, the King of Scotland. 125 Dogs To Be Sterilised In May ✂️🐕 I spoke about how abstract sterilising can be for many people to understand but it is what will save the most dogs from suffering. In all of 2022 I was able to do 302 dogs. In the month of May alone I have a minimum target to fund 125. In June I hope to take that to 250 dogs for the month. Not easy and very expensive but I’m putting the groundwork in place to scale this up. Nothing is more important. Little Rodney was in getting the snip last week as one of the dogs this month. 7 European Dogs 🇪🇺🛫 By the end of June there will be 7 dogs who have traveled to Europe. Lottie, Hope, King Whacker, Rodney and Moritz will join Little Squeak and Peaches who just arrived in Germany. I can’t explain how hard it is to figure all this stuff out and get the processes in place. I’m focusing on Europe now as it is the easiest for travel and paperwork but the rest of the world will happen soon too. It’s only 7 dogs but seeing them in their homes or about to travel makes me so happy and proud for them all. Progress The suffering I see on a daily basis for street dogs means that I am never really happy with the speed and progress of my mission. I just want to help them all immediately but that isn’t possible. Having said that, reading this update and knowing what else is coming in the pipeline makes me feel that I am making genuine progress. Between food, funding sterilisations, medical care and re-homing dogs I can genuinely now say I’m helping 100s of dogs per month but also stopping the suffering of 1000s in the future. As I always say I could never do any of this without the online support and good wishes of everybody on the mission with me. I don’t feel like I am alone doing this. My role is to make sure I don’t waste all the support and ensure I think of ways to move faster and execute accordingly. A lot done, a lore more to do. .DHH credits Marc Andreessen Marc Andreessen 🇺🇸 with helping him the most during the darkest time of his professional life: "It was during that rough going where Andreessen came in. We were a small company of 60 people and 20 took the offer and left. That's almost a third of the company that decided to leave and we got to a point where we were thinking that not many more have to leave before we need to worry about whether we can keep the lights on. And it was actually Tobi who then put me in contact with Marc Andreessen because Marc had been exposed to this phenomenon at some of his portfolio companies. And Marc gave us reassurance and a bunch of contacts. Marc said, "Do you need someone to come in to help do programming or help with operations or whatever?" And I was floored by the generosity because Marc and I haven't always seen eye to eye on things. Especially in terms of venture capital. He's been one of the main faces of venture capital for decades and I've been kind of critical at times. And it was just a realization that all those grievances we might have thought to be so big once upon a time were actually minuscule. We were fighting the white walkers on the other side of the wall and all our internal squabbles were going to be for nothing if those f*ckers got inside the wall and destroyed everything. And that felt like a real threat at the time. That could've happened. They could very well have just ripped the whole thing apart. And Marc clearly saw that that this was a collective, almost existential threat to the entire industry. If these activists were able to take over these institutions in the same way that they have taken over academia we would be f*cked and not just for a little while but potentially for decades. That couldn't stand. And Marc was incredibly helpful not just in terms of these contacts and introductions and so on but it was very powerful. When you have literally 40,000 people on Twitter calling you all the worst things in the world even the strongest individual might go for a second like "Holy sh*t. The mob is coming for me and there's no one else there." And there are other people there. Tobi was there. Marc was there. And it was incredibly helpful to give us the fortitude to go like "No do you know what? We're going to stick with it. We're not going to grovel. We're not going to apologize. We're not going to revert." And then what Marc also did was he gave me a syllabus for understanding the history of wokeness going all the way back to the '60s and beyond. That this didn't just come as lightning from a blue sky. This had an institutional grounding that was set in motion particularly in the '60s and the long march through the institutions, Herbert Marcuse and a lot of The Frankfurt School and all of these groups that had designs on how to reshape society and create the revolution they so dearly wanted, but with a timeline and a roadmap that was demarcated in decades. That it wasn't just like "Well we're going to put something together and then in two years something's going to happen." No they were sitting in the fucking '60s fantasizing about how to overthrow everything in the 2000s. It's actually incredible in a Dr. Evil sense of it but when you're on the receiving end of it it seemed a little less incredible and it was just difficult not knowing where's this coming from? Why is this happening all of a sudden? Well it wasn't happening all of a sudden. There was this long history of it and when you understood that history it made a lot more sense. We weren't just making a rejection for our little corner of the world. We were chipping in in the great civilizational battle of where this country was going to go, whether the white walkers beyond the wall were going to win. And we were like "No they're not going to f*cking win. Get them out of that f*cking wall. Take your goddamn spear and fire it with maximum velocity."
