Bian Lian, meaning "face-changing," is an act from Sichuan (China) opera that dates back over 300 years.

I gotta say, even though now I know how they do it, the sleight of hand still makes for an impressive spectacle. Love the ingenuity in designing the costumes this way.

For those saying the secret isn't revealed they litterally both show and explain what's happening. For the mask change, it's a thin silk mask that is attatched to a ribbon or thread that the preformer pulls quickly to yank the mask inside the rest of the costume. For the outer robes, there are tear-away seams sown into each layer of the outfit and each layer is attatched to ribbons that a stage helper pulls at a coreographed time. Essentially the outfit is like an onion, it has layers (shrek reference definitely intended) that the preformer either sheds or conceals within the inner costume. The only "secret" that isn't revealed is just the raw slight of hand and misdirection skill required to pull it off seamlessly or to switch solid masks which is the same form of slight of hand tallent used in stage magic and is down to raw skill and practice.
