This should be huge news, but it’s barely a whisper. The Trump administration is focusing on the wrong problem. The fraud isn’t with SNAP recipients. It’s with outside scammers. USDA let outdated SNAP cards stay vulnerable, and families lost about $555 million in food benefits, not to “cheating,” but to skimming and theft. Instead of fixing the tech, they policed recipients and fed the fraud myth. And in most states, they have stopped reimbursing stolen funds. The real fraud problem is criminals skimming benefits from outdated magnetic-stripe cards that USDA refused to fix.
