Police officers are suffocating small businesses that are already struggling to survive. Yesterday, I watched in disbelief as officers moved from one wines and spirits shop to another, demanding KSh 3,000 from each owner. Those who could not pay had their liquor confiscated on the spot. It did not end there. They stormed pool halls, seized pool sticks, carried away the balls, and arrested attendants whose only crime was trying to earn an honest living. As I watched this happen, I asked one officer a simple question: "If there is a bar operating inside a police station and even a pool table within police premises, should we also arrest the OCS?" There was silence. A young man standing nearby shook his head and said something that has stayed with me ever since: "Nairobi life is becoming unbearable. Corruption has become the system. Sometimes I wish Uhuru Kenyatta was still the President." Whether one agrees with him or not, his frustration reflected what many young people are feeling across the country. The tragedy is that these crackdowns are not targeting criminals. They are targeting hustlers, entrepreneurs, and young Kenyans trying to put food on the table. Kathy Hochul just pardoned ex-convict migrants….including a man convicted of killing someone.. so they could dodge deportation. Let that sink in. A sitting governor just decided that the comfort and convenience of non-citizens with violent records outweigh the safety and justice owed to American citizens. Ibrahim Traoré Appointed New President Of The AES As France continues to buckle under the economic weight of its dwindling influence in Africa, its 3 wealthiest former colonies continue to rise, with new energy deals, safer streets, stronger regional cohesion, equitable diplomatic relations, and rapid economic growth. From December 22 - 23, 2025, the leaders of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso convened for the second session of the College of Heads of State of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) – also known as the AES Summit. The events saw the inauguration of the Confederal Investment and Development Bank (BCID-AES) – an $895m-capitalized regional investment bank – the launch of AES Television – a media network built to amplify the stories and aspirations of the AES with a sovereign voice – and the appointment of Burkina Faso leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré as the new President of the Confederation. Traoré takes over from Mali President Assimi Goïta, who passed on the symbolic flag at the close of the Summit, and will lead the Confederation over the coming year. Earlier in the events, Traoré gave a powerful speech warning Africans across the Motherland and diaspora of the challenges still to come, and urging them to unite in the noble task of conquering these challenges, and ridding Africa of the scourge of Western imperialism once and for all. PRESS STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF THE NORTHERN COMRADES MOVEMENT OF NIGERIA (NCMN), MALLAM JABIR IBRAHIM YARO, AT THE WORLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE THEME: "THE SECURITY SITUATION ACROSS THE 19 NORTHERN STATES AND NIGERIA AS A WHOLE: A CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION" 15 TH June 2026 Gentlemen of the Press, Today, the Northern Comrades Movement of Nigeria addresses the nation with a deep sense of concern, patriotism, and urgency regarding the deteriorating security situation across the nineteen Northern States and the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a whole. Nigeria is passing through one of the most challenging security periods in its recent history. Across the North-West, North-East, North-Central, South-West, South-South and south-east Nigeria, innocent citizens continue to lose their lives to banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, communal conflicts, cattle rustling, and other violent criminal activities. From January to June 2026 alone, numerous communities in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Plateau, Borno, Yobe, Oyo and other states have experienced devastating attacks. As an organization committed to justice, peace and national development, we are deeply disturbed by the growing number of military officers and security personnel who have paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Among those reportedly lost in recent years are Brigadier General Musa Uba, Major General Abubakar Rabe (Rtd.), Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, Lieutenant Colonel S.I. Iliyasu, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, and Lieutenant Colonel Umar Ibrahim Mairiga, among others. We have also witnessed reports of attacks on military formations, the loss of camp commanders in operational theatres, attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and the deaths of officers and soldiers who dedicated decades of their lives to defending Nigeria. These losses represent not only personal tragedies for their families but also a painful loss of experience, leadership and institutional knowledge for our armed forces. The Northern Comrades Movement of Nigeria notes with concern the growing public perception that insecurity is becoming normalized. We refuse to accept such a situation. No nation can develop when its citizens live in fear. No economy can thrive when farmers cannot cultivate their lands, traders cannot move freely, and investors lack confidence in the safety of their investments. We recently took note of comments attributed to the Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa attributing the worsening insecurity situation to the current war between Iran and Israel and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, suggesting that only God can solve the insecurity challenges facing the country. While we acknowledge Almighty God as the ultimate source of protection and guidance, we respectfully submit that those entrusted with public office also have constitutional responsibilities that cannot be delegated, so Iran/Israel war should not be an excuse to the defence sector.

Nigeria is passing through one of the most challenging security periods in its recent history. Across the North-West, North-East, North-Central, South-West, South-South and south-east Nigeria, innocent citizens continue to lose their lives to banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, communal conflicts, cattle rustling, and other violent criminal activities. From January to June 2026 alone, numerous communities in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Plateau, Borno, Yobe, Oyo and other states have experienced devastating attacks. Hundreds of innocent citizens have been killed, many more injured, while thousands of families have been displaced from their homes. Particularly alarming is the situation in the North-West, where bandits continue to attack villages, abduct school children and travelers, impose illegal levies on rural communities, rustle livestock, and disrupt economic activities. Farmers are increasingly unable to access their farmlands, thereby threatening food security and worsening poverty across the region. Equally troubling is the resurgence of terrorist activities by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and emerging criminal groups such as Lakurawa operating in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions. These threats continue to undermine the sacrifices of our gallant security personnel and expose innocent citizens to untold hardship. Today the COP30 climate conference in Brazil witnessed large-scale protests organized by Indigenous peoples both inside and outside the conference venue. The protesters voiced their opposition to international climate policies that marginalize their rights and lands. They argue that their representation in these conferences is often merely symbolic, with little real influence over environmental and climate decision-making, despite being the traditional guardians of the rainforest and among the most affected by climate change. The Indigenous population in Brazil is estimated at around 900,000 people, spread across more than 300 ethnic and linguistic groups, most of whom live in the Amazon region. Beyond sector collaboration, I used the opportunity to issue a clear call to action: ALTON should prioritise the zero-rating of educational websites to expand access to learning resources nationwide. This is a practical, near-term intervention that can unlock opportunity for students and educators across Nigeria, especially in underserved communities where data costs can determine whether learning happens at all. It aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the commitment to inclusive, quality education and ensuring no child is left behind in the digital age. In their response, ALTON welcomed the focus on practical interventions that translate connectivity into measurable national impact.
