According to available reports, the vessel was heading towards Kolkata Port and lost control while attempting to take a turn near Nurpur Ferry Ghat, following which the ship collided with the riverbank. The collision reportedly caused damage to a portion of the riverbank. As per preliminary information, there have been no reports of any casualties. However, the exact reason behind the vessel losing control remains unclear, and the incident is under investigation. Some local reports have also mentioned strong tidal currents and turbulent conditions in the Hooghly at the time of the incident, but this has not been officially established as the cause of the accident. Nawata Bhum is a container vessel with IMO No. 9365685. The vessel operates under the Singapore flag and is approximately 148 metres long, with a gross tonnage of around 9,917 and a container capacity of approximately 1,108 TEU. On January 23rd, the Russian Electronic Surveillance Ship, Kildin, who was operating in the Eastern Mediterranean off the Coast of Syria, suffered some kind of Damage Control Casualty; with Flames and Black Smoke observed coming from its Smokestack by several nearby Vessels, including a number of NATO Warships. One of the NATO Ship was able to capture an Emergency Broadcast from the Ship to another nearby Vessel, which stated “Our ship is in difficulty, so keep your distance…Warship on your course…I am drifting. I’m not under command.” The Fire burned for at least Four Hours, as the Crew attempted to contain the Blaze and the Kildin’s Lifeboats were prepared for launch; with multiple NATO Warships offering aid to the burning Russian Spy Ship, though the Ship never responded to any NATO Hails.

The statement from U.S. Central Command is very enlightening. Instead of conducting a boarding, USS Spruance warned Touska for 6 hours it was in violation of the blockade. It is not clear if the ship was suppose to divert or stop to be boarded. The ship continued toward Iran and crossed the blockade line from the Arabian Sea to the Gulf of Oman. When Touska refused to comply, Spruance moved off from the ship, sent a warning to abandon the engine room and then proceeded to fire with its 5 inch/Mk 45. The gunfire either disabled the machinery or the crew brought the ship to a stop. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit then conducted a boarding and seized the ship. It is surprising to see that the ship was fired upon and not boarded via helicopters as was done against Venezuelan tankers earlier this year. It is unclear what damage was inflicted to the ship, but it is showing Not Under Command on its AIS. More to follow.
