Tonight in Glasgow. This is the reality. A family walked the streets with a 1-year-old and a 3 year-old tired, soaked, and freezing after no accommodation was provided during the day. At 10:30pm, they came to our night shelter. Two young children, exhausted and cold, needing safety. We then waited over 40 minutes for Glasgow City Council City Council out-of-hours to respond. 40 minutes… while a family with babies stood in distress. This is not acceptable. Brothers and sisters of Ireland, 🇮🇪 We gather not in silence, but in strength. We gather not in hate, but in hope. And we gather not to divide, but to demand. For the past number of days, our country has been brought to a standstill. Not by chaos without cause, but by people pushed to the edge. Farmers, workers, drivers, families, ordinary Irish people have taken to the roads, to the streets, to the gates of this nation’s lifelines because the cost of simply living has become too much to bear. They are not there for attention. They are there because they cannot afford not to be. Fuel prices have surged to unsustainable levels, driven by global crises and policies beyond the control of ordinary people. And yet, it is the ordinary people who are expected to carry the burden. They tell us support has been given. They tell us measures are in place. They tell us to be patient. But patience does not fill a tank. Patience does not keep a business alive. Patience does not put food on the table. Across Ireland, roads have been blocked, cities brought to a halt, and supply lines disrupted. Fuel depots, ports, even the country’s only oil refinery have been targeted in protest. Not out of malice but out of desperation. And now we see the response. The government condemns the protests. They speak of disruption, of law and order, of consequences. They warn of penalties and even bring in the Defence Forces to assist. But where was this urgency before? Where was this response when people were crying out for help? We ask not for chaos. We ask not for division. We ask for fairness. We ask for a government that listens before the country grinds to a halt. We ask for action before people are forced onto the streets to be heard. Because let us be clear: These protests did not appear out of nowhere. They are the result of years of pressure, rising costs, and people feeling ignored. You, in government, we ask you now!! 3 hours drive from us, war is still being fought. Today Palmyra was bombed and 68 people are dead. No one counts the animals. Because we are not under bombing in Idlib, people have stopped donating and we are facing a huge crisis in our funding. There is no improvement in the lives of the animals in Syria, and without funding we aren't able to help them anymore. We cannot send our mobile clinics out, because we have no funding. We cannot feed street animals because we can't afford to. We cannot send out rescue teams. We have lower donations now than we have ever had and our essential costs are the same now as they were before December 8th when the regime fell. Please, please will you reconsider reinstating your cancelled donations and giving us your support again? Without you we cannot help any of the ones who desperately need our aid. We will never forget our city’s most vulnerable people, who are systemically victims of violence, drug abuse and homelessness. We have to stand up to protect those who cannot defend themselves. Guardian Angels are conducting wellness checks on homeless and emotionally disturbed individuals we encounter. We are providing water to homeless and emotionally disturbed individuals who may be dehydrated and at risk of having an episode. We will be reporting any issues on running trains to the NYPD at stations where they are assigned. Don’t look away from those who are our most vulnerable. We can do better as a city.
