At dawn and again at dusk the sun's rays are at their most oblique -- and oddly enough at dawn & dusk is when temperatures are at their lowest. At solar noon however your location is getting as direct a shot as possible - and that's when it's warmest. This is what's happening to change our seasons as in summer we're getting hammered by the sun's energy straight on to the surface of the earth, & at much more extreme angles during winter. It's also why the Arctic and Antarctic remain cool even when it's summer in their hemispheres. I also love how you describe a 23.4° tilt as "tiny". tl;dr - "It doesn't make any sense to me" is never a valid argument.

It's tilt, you get warmer during the summer because the earth is tilted more towards the sun, then colder in the winter because you are tilted away. Less sun, means less heat. Distance is not a factor.
