The Ekranoplan Lun, often called the “Caspian Sea Monster,” stands as one of the Soviet Union’s most remarkable engineering feats. Developed in the 1980s, this ground-effect vehicle defied easy classification, operating somewhere between an aircraft and a ship as it skimmed just meters above the water. Measuring 74 meters in length and weighing more than 400 tons, the Lun was driven by six enormous turbojet engines and could reach speeds of up to 500 km/h. By flying at extremely low altitude, it exploited the ground effect—air compressed between its wings and the sea surface produced additional lift. Designed for military use, it carried six anti-ship missiles, allowing it to deliver rapid strikes across open waters.

Islamabad-based aviation company, MachAlpha, designed this Ekranoplan aircraft. This class of aircraft uses ground effect to enhance lift while operating very close to the surface, most often, the sea. MachAlpha performed a full design study and comprehensive performance characteristic analysis in-sim. It will be interesting to see this aircraft take flight. And I hope MachAlpha are able to partner on a project that links them up with manufacturing capabilities.

The Squire is designed to operate on water and in the air for missions including ISR, logistics, and combat search and rescue. A Soviet underwater nuclear test (depth 10 meters) off Novaya Zemlya of the 3.5 kiloton RDS-9 fission warhead on a T-5 torpedo. 30 ships were positioned from 300 m to 1.5 km away. On board the ships were 500 goats and sheep, and 100 dogs. Only the closest ship, a destroyer, sank.
