The Soviet space program used completely different instruments from American spacecraft. The INK "Globus" was an electromechanical computer used by a Soyuz which computed the spacecraft's position thru gears and cams [📹CuriousMarc]

There are different ways to achieve the same goals. The more ideas are out there the faster progress is, as for me. The best thing is the exchange of ideas.

Americans invested millions of $ developing a special ballpen so astronauts could write in zero gravity conditions. Russian astronauts used a pencil. Smart. 😄

It wasn't computer. It just mechanically followed precalculated "route" expecting that all time and distance calculations were correct and everything during the actual trip went "according to the plan".

The US spent millions $ developing a pen that would write in micro gravity. The Soviets brought pencils to the space station.

The slightest wear or dirt can throw those mechanical computers out of whack. No need for solar radiation. I worked on simpler ones in the Navy and what a pain they could be.
