There are different ways to achieve the same goals. The more ideas are out there the faster progress is, as for me. The best thing is the exchange of ideas.

The use of an electromechanical computer like the INK "Globus" in the Soviet space program highlights the fact that not all technological advancements are linear or predictable.

Americans invested millions of $ developing a special ballpen so astronauts could write in zero gravity conditions. Russian astronauts used a pencil. Smart. 😄

It wasn't computer. It just mechanically followed precalculated "route" expecting that all time and distance calculations were correct and everything during the actual trip went "according to the plan".

The US spent millions $ developing a pen that would write in micro gravity. The Soviets brought pencils to the space station.

The slightest wear or dirt can throw those mechanical computers out of whack. No need for solar radiation. I worked on simpler ones in the Navy and what a pain they could be.

I love the different ideas and competition. I love the differences that make up the nations. Need to keep it this way. I want to go to a different country and be completely out of my element, enjoy their customs, learn about them. Now it’s all Globalization…sucks.
