You can something similar when squatting or deadlifting by engaging the ground then pushing laterally into the side of your shoes as you start your lift. This activates more of your hip muscles and increases stability. It also prevents your adductor muscles from bringing your knees in too far. They can move some off line but only about 3-5 degrees inward.

Lol, soviets? Working with your own weight has limitations, it will be good at start. After normal powerlifting training your pushups doesn't even bother muscles anymore.
