Every Pentecost Sunday, the 9m wide eye of the Pantheon becomes the gateway for the Holy Spirit. At least, that is what it commemorates: the day when the Spirit descended upon the apostles. Inside the Pantheon, this is represented by a shower of rose petals that fills the monument with profound solemnity, as well as a beauty that captivates tourists. In the Acts of the Apostles, the coming of the Spirit is described as tongues of fire, and who better than Rome’s firefighters to carry out this floral tradition. They are responsible for making these petals rain down directly into the center of the temple built by Hadrian.
