It just occurred to me that Lullaby & Lovecats are two songs in which the brief mention of dinner has completely different connotations! In Lullaby dinner time is a result of a victim & predator (abuser?) relationship whereby the victim suffers psychological abuse before succumbing to the dominant party’s voracious appetite. Lullaby: “The spiderman is having me for dinner tonight” In stark contrast, the playful Lovecats features two lustful felines/lovers on equal footing whose perception of dinnertime is slightly less foreboding. Dinner time in this scenario is a possible double entendre. Instead of one devouring the other, the two lovers ultimately both end up being victims of their own self-destructive tendencies (the song only vaguely hints at their demise). Lovecats: “We should have each other to dinner, huh? We should have each other with cream” P.S. I prefer this acoustic version to both the live and studio versions. I wish the band would consider playing unplugged versions of some songs at live events. Lullaby seems especially well suited to being performed in a non-amplified environment.
