The Sun has really woken up over the past 48 hours, producing multiple solar flares (including an “X-class” event), across 4 different regions. Further large flares are likely in the coming days!

The second of today’s X-class solar flares was truly a long-duration event. Where typical flares last 10s of minutes, this event took over 6 hours. The flare also showed a fundamental part of solar flares: a ‘current sheet’. #spaceweather 1/5

The entire month of May 2025 in the Sun’s atmosphere. Although the Sun produced a few large solar flares, sunspot numbers were the lowest we’ve seen since August 2022. We are likely now slowly moving towards solar minimum, but we still expect large flares throughout this decline!

Some regions on the Sun stay active for months... and they may produce far more solar flares than expected. Using data from this citizen science project, researchers found these long-lived regions are 3–6× more likely to produce the Sun’s most powerful flares:

Here is all the solar flare activity (< 48 hours) defined by the 1.1 X-flare and 7 m-flares. Notice all the activity now from the large sunspot cluster in the southern hemisphere, it appears to have woken up once it moved into alignment with 3I/ATLAS. Interesting...

The Sun is absolutely COOKING right now. 1 X-flare and 10 M-flares in less than 16 hours, and this still looks like preliminary activity to stronger solar flares and big coronal mass ejections as active region 4366 has grown significantly since my last update. BOOMSHAKALAKA!!

This movie shows the past 24 hours in active region AR 14366 – the area responsible for the recent strong solar flares! This wavelength shows cooler (1 million °C) plasma, revealing how dynamic the coronal magnetic field is right now. This region has many more flares to give!

In the last 38 hours we've had 1.7 and 1.1 X-flares from the Sun, earthquake activity off the coast of Japan (M6.8, M6.4, M6.0) has becoming worrying and looking like foreshock activity for a BIG earthquake (M8+), and we're now in a S1 radiation storm from the 2nd X-flare. Multiple solar storm impacts are expected over the next few days. Big linear planetary alignment occurs on the 20th with the Sun, Mercury, Moon, Earth, and Uranus with Pluto and Saturn+Neptune in harmonic aspects. Yikes...

WOW! The new sunspots in the southern hemisphere of the Sun rotating into view are VERY ACTIVE. That's exactly the sort of build-up in activity usually observed before BIG X-Flares. Next two weeks are likely to be very dynamic energetically

5½ days of sunspot group 4366 We've seen 63 M-class flares, 6 X-class flares, 0 radiation storms, 5 coronal mass ejections (CMEs) - 3 of them slow. It has passed its zenith, but it is not yet at an end. The big question is: will it produce another CME?

Further improvements into the real-time lens flares I'm building for Filmic Plus :D Has more details, plays nicely with other effects, and can even be rendered over an alpha! 🥰

Double hit directly over the Americas with 6.7 and 6.3 M-flares. A solar storm impact is also already in progress, through the geomagnetic activity from it has been relatively muted thus far (+Bz)...

🚨 NASA released some new close up footage of solar flares and holy moly 😳 it doesn't even look real! NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory just released stunning close-range footage of solar flares, revealing the Sun as a maze of blazing plasma loops and chaotic magnetic fields. The new recording shows dark filaments slicing across bright, twisting arcs as massive bursts of energy erupt and reshape in real time. To put the scale in perspective: the Sun is about 1.39 million km wide, roughly 109 times the size of Earth. What looks like small sparks in the footage are actually structures larger than our entire planet. These visuals aren't just beautiful, they're a reminder of how powerful and unpredictable our nearest star truly is. - nasa
