Doug Ford wants a headline and attention. Scott Moe wants Canadians to keep their jobs. That is the whole fight. Ford is out here telling reporters Saskatchewan should weaponize potash and oil like it is a soundbite. “Their agricultural sector would be dead overnight,” he says. Easy words when the mines are not in your backyard and the pink slips will not land in Vaughan. Moe’s answer was adult: “Not possible. Why would you put Canadians out of work?” Because that is what an export tax on oil and potash actually does. The United States already buys most of the potash it uses from us. We supply roughly four-fifths of those imports. Sounds like leverage until you remember America is still about half of what we sell. Cut it off and they shop Russia, Belarus, Israel. We do not find a new buyer overnight. We lose the market, we lose investment, and Saskatchewan workers eat the first punch so Ontario can look tough on TV. So ask the question nobody in Ottawa wants. Last night, Mark Carney announced that Canada will somehow double its non-US exports. But how does he plan to do that when his anti-development laws, taxes, and policies that block Canadian energy and critical mineral exports, remain in place? Mark Carney cannot double non-US energy exports until he repeals the Shipping Ban, Bill C-48, that blocks exports to Asia. Not until he scraps C-50, the so-called “Just Transition” bill that kills energy export jobs, and not until he greenlights a West-to-East pipeline to get Canadian energy to Europe. Until then, all of this is just more Liberal empty promises and rhetoric.

“They” stole a front-end loader and drove it through a bank wall. 3 a.m. Kitchener. Scotiabank at Longo’s plaza. Not a crowbar. Not a smashed window. A piece of construction equipment through brick to rip the ATM out of the building. Police showed up while they were still at it. They fled in a stolen truck and hit a cruiser on the way out. Tariffs 101: Tariffs are not paid by countries. Canada does not pay them to the US. Likewise, the US does not pay them to Canada. The importer from that country imposing the tariffs, pays it. For example, if Trump imposes 50% tariffs on trucks made by GM, but GM made them in Canada. GM is paying $50K in tariffs. Not Canada. And that $50K extra in tariffs, is ultimately paid by the consumer. Ultimately, it's a tax paid by businesses, passed down to the consumer of the country that imposed the tariffs. Likewise, Canada imposing tariffs on the US, only hurts Canadian customers. Countertariffs are done strategically, to prevent the flight of manufacturing, from Canada, to the US. In the end, during trade wars like this, consumers always end up paying the price.
