After much thought and consideration, I have decided to vote 'No' on the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill. Firstly, there is a real fear that vulnerable people, including women who have suffered domestic abuse, could be coerced into taking their own lives. Secondly, many disabled people fear that their lives will be devalued and could be pushed to take their lives. Thirdly, the scope of this bill could be widened to include more illnesses and younger ages, as has been the case in other countries. Instead of creating a pathway for people to end their lives, we should be strengthening the palliative care services that help them live their final days with dignity, comfort and support.

Today I questioned the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on palliative care following a recent report which shows that care is in crisis. Whatever your view on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. I hope everyone agrees it should be safe. I’m concerned he couldn’t guarantee the bills safety or that people wouldn’t be compelled to take the decision to have an early death due to a lack of palliative care provision.

From my career in the NHS I know that even the best palliative care cannot prevent the terrifying loss of dignity and control that can occur in a person's last days. People should not have to face this prospect at the end of their lives. This Bill will shorten death, not life.

I welcome the Terminally Ill Adults End of Life bill passing its second reading. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me from both sides of the debate to share your own personal stories. I will do all I can to make this the very best possible legislation, with safeguards, that will allow the terminally ill to shorten their suffering. In my speech I attempted to tackle some of the main debate surrounding the bill.
