Northern politicians have destroyed the North out of greed and cowardice. For northern Nigeria to survive and progress, they must first abolish the Almajiri school system and make education compulsory from primary to secondary level and even up to university before venturing into Islamic education. If we are forced to remain together in one Nigeria with the current attitude of northern politicians and religious leaders, Nigeria will never achieve anything in the future.

Iran’s delegation will travel to peace talks in Islamabad but only if Israel stops its attacks on Lebanon. Iran’s deputy foreign minister Saeed Khatibzadeh | سعید خطیب‌زاده told me any peace in the region had to include Lebanon and the coming hours will be critical. Iran was on the verge of retaliation last night but held back to allow for diplomacy including calls from the Americans to the the Israelis urging them to stop hitting Lebanon.

Do not rely on international organisations like the United Nations or the European Community to make or to keep a peace with freedom and justice. There is no substitute for national leadership. Of course, it would be churlish not to give the UN credit for what it has achieved, particularly in Cambodia. Where, as in the Gulf, it has been given strong leadership, by one or more nation states, it has been effective. But we delude ourselves if we think that it will be capable of moving with the speed, the will and the determination needed to keep the peace without such a lead from nation states. The United Nations depends on consensus and that is simply not an adequate basis for action or for readiness to take combat risks (as we have seen in Bosnia). Act in concert, yes. But act by consensus and you may not act at all. Indeed, as I've so often said, consensus is the negation of leadership. If we attempt to rely solely on the United Nations, we shall soon learn that it is an institution where copious resolutions become a substitute for effective action.
