UNUSUAL China begins building the “New Three Gorges” China has announced the launch of a major new project — the construction of the “Three Gorges” waterway on the Yangtze River, which will include the largest navigation gate in the world. The project, costing 77.2 billion yuan (£11.4 billion), includes a new navigation channel at the Three Gorges Dam — the largest engineering project in the world — as well as an expansion of the dam’s capacity at Gezhouba downstream on the Yangtze. It is designed for vessels of up to 10,000 tons. This is the first major national project to be launched under China’s 14th Five‑Year Plan (2026–2030), and it comes after ten years of research and planning studies. It is being built due to the rising volume of transport along the Yangtze River — China’s main inland shipping artery.
