Thumpers arent meant to be placed near you, their meant to attract worms away from a distance and to keep them occupied elsewhere, crawlers will aggro over a thumper if a worms already that close.

It's happened to me also on a wreck site. Put a thumper down and he went for me, came back to my death and the thumper was still thumping. Then to rub it in my face that I lost all my shit, he at the thumper right infront of my face. @Funcom needs to fix this among others.
