The ties between Cyprus and India are rooted in shared historical experiences. Forged through common struggles and strengthened by our joint commitment to democracy, and respect for international law. This State Visit, which transpires less than a year since Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus and takes place during... the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, has not only confirmed the enormous potential of our relationship. It has also provided the space to advance it further. We build this strategic partnership on solid foundations, and a clear vision, as encapsulated in the Joint Declaration on the Implementation of our Strategic Partnership we agreed last year, which is already delivering tangible results across key sectors. This growing partnership builds also on the leaps of progress over the past year in EU-India relations, which culminated, in the first month of the Cyprus Presidency, when the political agreement was announced on concluding the milestone Free Trade Agreement. In fact, the Cyprus Presidency has placed EU-India relations, trade, connectivity at the forefront of our work, driven by our vision for a European Union that is truly Open to the World. It is in fact my firm conviction that, in an increasingly shifting geopolitical environment, the EU–India relationship will be one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century. Cyprus has now begun its presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will continue through the first half of this year. We are working to make as much progress as possible during this period on opening negotiating clusters and on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. We discussed this today with the President of Cyprus NikosChristodoulides, and I am counting on productive cooperation. The President and I talked about strengthening sanctions against Russia, which must remain in place as long as Russia’s aggression and occupation continue. We also touched on reinforcement of our air defense, the production and supply of drones, and Cyprus’s participation in the PURL initiative and SAFE instrument. We hope that support for Ukraine will remain strong. Thank you to Cyprus and to the President for the support.

Today, I am glad to welcome the President of Cyprus, Nikos NikosChristodoulides, to Ukraine on his first visit. This visit comes shortly before Cyprus assumes the EU Presidency in January. We see it both as a sign of support for Ukraine and as a signal of our shared readiness to continue working together – for the benefit of both our states and all of Europe. I briefed the President on the situation in Ukraine, and we held a detailed discussion of our shared European agenda. Europe is now shaping a new global role for itself – all the events that have been taking place for almost four years now show that Europe’s role must be truly strong and effective. I am grateful to Cyprus for its support at the political level, including with regard to the negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership. We expect the coming months to bring more progress in Ukraine’s path toward the European Union, and Cyprus’s Presidency can become significant in terms of opening clusters for Ukraine and enabling other necessary decisions. Today, we reached an agreement on four documents between Ukraine and India, covering the medical field, agricultural cooperation, humanitarian relations, and culture. Following the visit, we also agreed on a joint statement focusing on the development of a strategic partnership, bilateral trade, and continued military-technical cooperation. India supports Ukraine's national sovereignty and territorial integrity. And this is critical because everyone in the world must equally respect the UN Charter.

The highly successful visit of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to Austria in July 2024 was a milestone in the India-Austria partnership, especially in elevating our economic and commercial linkages to a higher trajectory. Prime Minister Modi had emphasised on the political will of the Government of India to expand our partnership with Austria.
