Volker Schlöndorff on the reason behind Oskar's anger in "The Tin Drum" (1979): "Oskar enjoys destruction for the pure childish joy of destroying objects. I guess you could see this as more spontaneous and less dangerous. It is probably more dangerous to destroy things to attract attention than for the pure fun involved. I'm not a moralist when it comes to facing this issue." Unlike the distortion-heavy angst that dominated much of the decade, 1979 leaned into something quieter: nostalgia, youth, boredom, freedom, and uncertainty. Its drum-machine groove, swirling guitars, and detached vocal delivery captured what it actually felt like to be young in the ’90s — hanging out, going nowhere, knowing something was changing but not knowing what.
