There are two major traditions of Japanese cut glass: Edo Kiriko and Satsuma Kiriko. Edo Kiriko began in 1834 in Edo, influenced by earlier European “Namban” glass introduced by Portuguese and Dutch traders. It is characterized by thin glass, sharp and precise cuts, and geometric patterns such as asanoha and yarai. Satsuma Kiriko, created in 1851 under Shimazu Nariakira in Kagoshima, developed through the domain’s industrial modernization efforts. It features thick glass, deep cuts, and richly colored overlays that produce a distinctive gradation effect. Both styles use layered colored glass carved with rotating grindstones, but Edo Kiriko is refined and delicate, while Satsuma Kiriko is bold and luxurious.

I agree that this is a traditional method of producing crystal glass, but it's not unique to Japan. It's also done in Poland. The photo shows a worker creating cuts in the finished glass to create crystal glass at the Julia Glassworks in Piechowice.

The feedback was kinder and more encouraging than I'd imagined. This is a good reason to stop and smile.
