The ancient Chinese papermaking process, traditionally credited to Cai Lun around 105 CE, involved using natural fibers such as mulberry bark, hemp, and bamboo. These materials were beaten into a pulp, mixed with water, and spread onto a mesh screen to dry, producing lightweight and durable paper.
