Details/Context 🚨 "$310M Verdict: Justice for Tyre Sampson and Amusement Ride Safety Reform" A Missouri family has been awarded $310 million in damages after a jury found the manufacturers of the Orlando FreeFall ride liable for the death of 14-year-old Tyre Sampson. The attraction, once the world's tallest free-standing drop tower, was located at ICON Park in Orlando. The ride manufacturer, Funtime Handels, and builder, Gerstlauer Amusement Rides, are based in Austria, meaning the family must seek an order from an Austrian court to collect the damages. Sampson, who was 6-foot-2 and weighed around 380 pounds, fell from the 430-foot ride on March 24, 2022, during a spring break trip. The ride had a 287-pound weight limit, and an investigation found that the operator had manually adjusted the sensors on his seat, allowing it to operate despite being unsafe. The teen was denied access to another ride due to his size but was allowed on FreeFall, leading to his fatal fall. His parents, Nekia Dodd and Yarnell Sampson, sued both the ride’s operators and manufacturers, alleging negligence and failure to prioritize safety. They had previously settled with ICON Park and the ride operator. The jury awarded $155 million to each parent, with emotional testimonies highlighting the devastating impact of their son’s death on their lives. The ride was demolished a year after the accident. During its removal, Dodd expressed relief but deep sorrow, stating, “The ride’s coming down, and I’m thankful for that, but my son’s not coming back.” The case emphasized corporate responsibility in ensuring amusement ride safety. Attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, called the verdict a step toward holding corporations accountable. He criticized the manufacturers for failing to install a simple seatbelt that could have prevented the tragedy. Funtime Handels representatives were not present in court. Following the incident, Florida passed the Tyre Sampson Act in May 2023. The law mandates seat belts and harnesses for rides over 100 feet and requires independent safety inspections. Operators must report accidents within a set timeframe, and state authorities can impound unsafe rides. ICON Park supported the legislation, emphasizing its commitment to rigorous safety protocols. This was not the first fatal accident at ICON Park. In 2020, a 21-year-old worker died during a daily safety check on a different ride. The Sampson case has sparked calls for stricter safety measures to prevent future tragedies in the amusement park industry. FYI, I focus on adding context to social media posts that often lack it.
