Azeez Al-Shaair shared with Sean Pendergast a couple weeks ago that defensive coordinator Matt Burke opened the offseason by showing the defense clips of their mistakes and slippage down the stretch last season. Al-Shaair explained Burke is holding the unit accountable to the standard they’ve set for themselves as to being the league’s best defense. He pointed out that while points allowed per game isn’t the end-all-be-all, the Texans’ numbers dipped significantly over the final three games after leading much of the season.

I like Kyle Theige's idea here about prioritizing roster flexibility over roster continuity. But I do wonder how much the Wolves' floor -- on both offense and defense -- disappears if *both* Randle and Gobert are not on the team next season. Some floor-raiser numbers on Randle and Gobert from this season... Wolves halfcourt offense was 8.6 points per 100 possessions better with Randle on the floor - Randle ON: 101.3 - Randle OFF: 92.7 - Randle ON, Edwards OFF: 99.9 - Edwards ON, Randle OFF: 95.8 Wolves halfcourt defense was 10.3 points per 100 possessions better with Gobert on the floor - Gobert ON: 91.3 - Gobert OFF: 101.6 - Gobert ON, Edwards OFF: 88.1 - Edwards ON, Gobert OFF: 105.7 League-average for halfcourt offensive/defensive rating was 98.1 during the 25-26 season. Meaning: Relative to league-average, the offense was awful when Randle sat and defense was awful when Gobert sat. Edwards may be the Wolves' best player, but Randle and Gobert have clearly been the Wolves' stabilizers.

Everyone saying, “Ohio State won the playoff, and they were the better team” is completely missing the point. Ohio State lost TWO games to Michigan and Oregon. In the old system, they’re not even playing for a national championship. 2008 USC lost to Oregon State. Did that suddenly mean Oregon State was the better team? 😂 USC finished 12-1, allowed 9.0 POINTS PER GAME, ranked #1 nationally in scoring defense and held opponents to 221.8 yards per game. That defense has a legitimate argument as one of the greatest ever. Give that USC team a 12-team playoff and they would’ve dog-walked everybody.
