One possible explanation as to why the left has no theory of mind of the right comes from Jonathan Haidt’s “The Righteous Mind” (2012). He shows that moral judgments come from instinct and are then rationalized. The six moral foundations are care, fairness, loyalty, authority, sanctity, and liberty. Leftists build their moral world on care and fairness, whereas the right draws on all 6 almost equally. This implies that the right’s moral range generally allows them to understand the left, whereas the left tend to be unable to comprehend moral worldviews based on loyalty, authority, sanctity, and liberty. The left is constantly arguing with only a third of the moral vocabulary the right is actually using.
