No es correcta la comparación visual porque se basa en el mapa de la Proyección de Mercator creada en 1569 que estira las áreas cerca de los polos (norte) y encoge las del ecuador. Por ejemplo, África es 14 veces más grande que Groenlandia, cosa que no sucede en ese mapa.

The Uruguayan stupidity of calling ourselves the little country in South America. I was even told at school that we were one of the smallest countries. This might be a personality trait but stop the misinformation.

That vision is wrong. Uruguay’s size is well measured and not really up for debate; the issue is how it looks on certain maps. Mercator-type maps stretch places more as you move away from the equator, so countries in Europe or near the poles look bigger than they really are compared with Uruguay. Because Uruguay is closer to the equator, it suffers less of that visual stretching than, say, the UK or Scandinavia. Those “true size of Uruguay” maps are mostly fixing our visual intuition, not correcting some hidden error in its official area. The tricky part in the viral posts is the way they’re framed, as if maps had the actual land area wrong, when it’s really just our perception that’s off.
