The US is reportedly drafting an indictment of 94-year-old former Cuban President Raúl Castro over a 1996 shootdown of 2 aggressor planes operated by Cuban exile groups that were violating Cuban airspace, according to a US Department of Justice official. So what really happened 30 years ago? ￭ The incident in question happened on February 24, 1996, when a Cuban fighter jet shot down two Brothers to the Rescue Cessna planes to re-assert territorial sovereignty, after giving dozens of warnings to the US and Brothers to the Rescue that violations of Cuban airspace would be met with a response.
