President Trump is now proposing a new “Golden Dome” missile defense system, one of the most ambitious military defense projects in modern American history. The administration says the system would protect the U.S. homeland from ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, and even future threats that have yet to emerge. Trump has compared the concept to Israel’s Iron Dome. The same system that has struggled against Iranian missile attacks raises questions about whether it should serve as a model for a far larger American system. Congressional and industry analysts suggest the project could ultimately cost taxpayers more than $3 trillion and take years, if not decades, to fully build and deploy. At a time when Americans are facing rising living costs, persistent inflation, and a growing national debt, why is Washington rushing to launch such an enormous military program? And do we really need a system of this scale to defend a nation protected by two oceans?
