“Resistance is futile”👇 I once again urged the Safeguarding Minister to make sure Keighley and the Bradford District are specifically included in the national grooming gangs inquiry after years of resistance from local authorities - particularly in light of claims of past “cover-ups” 🚨 I’m extremely worried by the position now being adopted by Bradford Council and an MP in the Bradford District after previously opposing the need for an inquiry. They are now saying they would support an inquiry if officials running the process (who have yet to be appointed) deem it necessary. That is not the same as saying they will not be actively pushing for the inquiry to focus on Bradford behind the scenes and suggests that really, Bradford Council’s position hasn’t changed. The Minister responded that “resistance is futile” - which is promising - but it is worrying that there was no acknowledgement of the same kind of resistance we have faced from local leaders on this issue for years. 🧵1/11

I rather lost my rag yesterday at a poorly attended short debate on rape gangs and an inquiry. The government wants to talk about child sex abuse per se, but the question is why state agencies and public servants looked the other way in terms of these specific, organised rape gangs. Even now, the government and many in the media refuse to confront how a fear of being labelled racist is still concealing the truth.

Today, I urged Shabana Mahmood MP and Anne Longfield to immediately launch a targeted local inquiry across Keighley and the Bradford District. Time is of the essence and the Casey Audit is clear that local investigations can commence sooner in areas where the Home Office agree that sufficient evidence already exists. Two decades on from Ann Cryer first sounding the alarm, we have shockingly still never had a full independent inquiry. And after years of campaigning, it is time that this sorry saga of local resistance finally comes to an end.
