The Ukrainian mistake that put an entire strategy into question Until the end of 2024, Ukrainian defenses using drones were very effective, slowing down not only the Russian advance but also inflicting significant casualties. During this period, the Russians heavily invested in drones, from factories to the development of...

Ukrainian heavy drones, which perform various tasks (as a relay, for logistics, mining and destruction), have become an integral part of Ukrainian defense. It is extremely difficult to imagine the battlefield through the eyes of a UA military without this class of drones. For years together with my fighters we have been preparing for the fact that the enemy is about to scale this direction and a similar class of drones will appear in their hands. For the first time I met them during the Kursk operation. But what was my surprise that Russians after 5 years of war have not yet tested these drones and launched them into series. But it will be changed. Undoubtedly, the appearance and scaling of certain drones on both sides is due to the conditions in which they work (for example, Russian INs are not even close to Ukrainian ones), but it is difficult to find arguments for abandoning this class of drones. And Russians are not abandoning them. But they see a significantly smaller role in them than in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Russian plans include the creation of UAV battalions (which are significantly smaller in number of personal than Ukrainian ones) as part of regiments and brigades, where each battalion will have 4 crews of heavy drones. And Russian newly formed SBS forces according to plans should receive two companies of heavy bombers. And I only hope that this should not be a surprise for the Armed Forces of Ukraine as it was in the case with the completely symmetrical and non-innovative actions from «Rubicon». ‼️‼️🇺🇲 BIG | The USA for the first time shot down a fiber-optic drone The American company Epirus reported a significant breakthrough in the field of countering drones. Its microwave system "Leonidas" for the first time hit a drone with fiber-optic control - one of the most difficult targets for modern electronic warfare means. Previously, the complex had already hit a swarm of 49 drones, but the new test was particularly significant. In December 2025, at a closed test range of the US Army, the system was able to disable a fiber-optic UAV, depriving it of control and causing an uncontrolled fall. Fiber-optic drones, which are widely used today, including in the Ukrainian theater of operations, do not use radio control channels. The signal is transmitted via a thin fiber-optic cable, which makes such drones extremely difficult to detect and suppress. In a report by the US Army in 2024, such drones were called "one of the main threats to air defense systems and anti-drone warfare". The CEO of Epirus noted that the mass spread of fiber-optic UAVs has become a turning point in the evolution of unmanned warfare and has revealed a serious gap in anti-drone defense systems - a gap that "Leonidas" is designed to close. In 2025, Epirus received a contract for $43.5 million for the supply of two second-generation "Leonidas" systems. Its range of destruction is more than twice that of the first version; a 30% increase in power; there are built-in high-energy batteries; a reduction in dependence on external power supply. The system can be installed on: Stryker 8×8 armored vehicles, light tactical vehicles, other mobile platforms. See the latest updates with us: Visioner

I thank each of our combat brigades, all soldiers, and commanders who are using all their strength to destroy the enemy, especially by effectively deploying our drone capabilities. Our Ukrainian Defense and Security Forces are already gaining an advantage in this area – in July, our soldiers deployed more drones than the occupiers. This needs to be a steady trend on the front – across all types of drones available to our units: from FPV to all others, including our long-range drones – which are already having a strategic impact on the war. Impacting – in the interests of Ukraine. And our Ukrainian leadership in drones can not only be a factor that brings a just end to the war closer but also makes Ukraine a supplier of security for other states. Today, Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister for Innovations, Development of Education, Science and Technologies, and Oleksandr Kamyshin, Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, also reported at the Staff meeting on drone production and financing. For this year, a million drones have already been contracted with our manufacturers, and by the end of the year, there will be more. Our drone production capabilities are consistently expanding. We're working not only with state funding but also with partners who are investing in our drone manufacturing. These drones are crucial for our defense now and will later enhance security for everyone who values life and stands with us in solidarity.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Prof. John Mearsheimer: ‘Ukraine’s long-range drone attacks into Russia have BACKFIRED, Russia retaliated by closing the Odessa Port and turned Ukraine into a land-locked country.’ ‘The Ukrainian drones have been Ukraine’s great saviour on the battlefield. I believe that this war would have ended a year or two if the Ukrainians didn’t have drones because the Ukrainians have a significant shortage of manpower, a significant shortage of artillery. And in a war that was heavily dependent on just manpower and artillery, I think the Ukrainians would have collapsed a while ago. But the drones have really helped keep them in the fight in an important way. So that’s one dimension to the drone issue. Then there’s the whole question of using drones in long-range attacks into Mother Russia. And this of course is what the Ukrainians have been doing big time in recent months. And I don’t think that those attacks have had any meaningful impact on the course of the war. And of course as you were alluding to, if anything it speeded up the end of the war because there is good reason to think that the Russian response to these long-range drone attacks by the Ukrainians is that the Russians have decided to retaliate by attacking Odessa and other Ukrainian sites on the Black Sea. And this has had a devastating effect on Ukraine because so much of Ukraine’s agricultural product as well as its industrial product moves out of Ukraine via the Black Sea ports. And of course the most prominent one is Odessa. But what’s happened here, and it’s very important to emphasise this, is that the Russians have basically closed the Odessa ports. And the end result is that today Ukraine is effectively a landlocked country. And given the percentage of exports, Ukrainian exports that go out of those ports through the Black Sea, this is going to have devastating effects on the Ukrainian economy. So if anything the long-range drone attack on the part of the Ukrainians against Mother Russia are backfiring.’ Watch the full interview in the quoted post below 👇

ZELENSKYY: Today, Ukraine shot down 388 out of 400 Russian drones. A higher percentage of Russian drones is being intercepted, but Ukrainians are working to further increase that number. Specific solutions for the protection of Odesa and Dnipro have already been developed and will be implemented, as these cities have been especially heavily targeted lately. “This afternoon there was another massive attack by Russian drones. A significant number of more than 400 drones since the morning alone, including more than 200 Shaheds. The density of the attack is high, which is why - despite a high interception rate (388 drones shot down) - there were still strikes in Ternopil, Zhytomyr, Rivne region, Trostyanets, Vinnytsia region, and other regions and our communities. We are strengthening all areas of protection. There is already a decision regarding the protection of the city of Dnipro. The military command and the Ministry of Defense analyze each attack and offer solutions. For Dnipro, we will deploy additional radars, electronic warfare systems, and crews. There is also a solution for Odesa. We are also registering a higher percentage of shootdowns. But we still need to increase it. We are aware that the Russians are trying to bypass our air defense with the density of the attack and the intensity of strikes. We will counteract, but we are aware that we cannot stop there. This is not the result that is needed. Still not enough. We need to further strengthen our cities and villages. And it is important that every day we work with partners to have air defense components against missiles” - Ukrainian president on Friday, May 1st.

Hezbollah’s fiber-optic FPV drones, which cost under $500, are disabling Israeli Merkava tanks worth $5 to 7 million. The IOF does not have a single weapon in their arsenal that can detect these new drones, which are completely immune to traditional electronic jamming devices. VPol journalist Calla Walsh (Calla) explains. ■ Rather than a radio link, the fiber-optic drones are physically tethered to their operator by an ultra-thin fiber-optic cable that stretches for up to 60km, transmitting video and data back to the pilot. ■ The Israeli occupation has been shocked by the introduction of these drones into the battlefield, and there is no indication the IOF had any foresight or intel on Hezbollah’s supply chain. ■ These drones were first deployed by Russia and Ukraine, but there’s no sign of direct Russian involvement, nor is there any need for it. Rather, Hezbollah is closely studying other warzones to innovate and adapt for their own battle against Israeli occupation, and information on fiber-optic FPVs is open-source. ■ Israeli media describes it as “a technological arms race, and although Israel is at the forefront of interception technology, there is currently no complete solution to the threat… the battlefield in Lebanon proves that sometimes a single thin thread can threaten even the most heavily armored technological systems… Israel possesses Arrow missiles and F-35 Lightning II aircraft, but it has failed to deal with cheap explosive drones in southern Lebanon.”
