The widely used Mercator map falsely exaggerates the size northern hemisphere by inaccurately boosting the sizes of North America, Greenland, Northern Europe, and Russia. Accurate ones show the world as it really is. The change proposed by Togo, was popular, with 165 countries voting on it. Of those, 164 voted in favor, and just one—the United States—voted against. The Mercator map was drawn up by European colonialists in the 1500s but has been widely used ever since. Geographers have been campaigning for the real map to be used for more than 40 years. . .
