The uncomfortable truth is that some beliefs are held for the same reason some people buy Rolexes: they look good in public. In the same way that many people buy expensive material possessions, not because they especially like the possession itself, but because they know it will impress other... people, there are people who express luxury beliefs not simply because they believe them, but because they know those beliefs will bring them clout and status. So the motivation behind the luxury good and the luxury belief is often very similar. But many people convince themselves that their motives are completely sincere. Take a guy who buys a Lamborghini. If you ask him why he bought it, he might say, “Look, it makes me feel confident. I like driving it. It makes me feel good. That’s why I bought it. I’m not trying to impress anyone.” And I think part of you might suspect, “Well, all of that may be true. But I also think part of you likes the fact that when people see you in that Lamborghini, they think of you in a certain way.” The same thing can happen with luxury beliefs. People may sincerely believe what they are saying. But part of me thinks that, somewhere deep down, there is also a sense of satisfaction that comes from expressing a belief and having your peers, your social circle, and other similarly credentialed elites applaud you for it. They think, “What a compassionate, interesting, sophisticated person you are for holding that view.” A belief can be sincerely held while also conferring status to the speaker.show more

If it was taken up for status or because everyone around you was saying it, it's not a sincere believe. What happens is people gaslight themselves into believing it's sincere. Classic post hoc rationalization or "taming the wild elephant." You find ways to justify it after.

Many of the people who come up with these ideas may have an end goal that looks something like a socialist utopia or the toppling of capitalism as it exists today. They may believe that people are suffering from a Marxist idea called false consciousness. In other words, they think people do not understand what is really happening, and that we need to wake them up. So they set out to spread these ideas. This couple is having a wedding that will reflect who they are. They openly don’t seem to care if anyone will actually go or not. I think weddings are a celebration for everyone to join in for a special day. But I also think that offending guests before they even go might be a decision that will turn in a decision full of regret. So here’s my take on this. The way I see it is that they are going to be disappointed. I know others might argue and say that it’s selfish for the guests to not go because of the conditions set forth by the bride and groom, however it goes both ways. If they know guests won’t like the conditions of the wedding, then maybe they should compromise a little. I think they should give people options. I feel that this is going to show the bride and groom who is actually their real friends and who aren’t in their eyes. They won’t care if the guests don’t like the wedding rules, they are going to expect them to go because they think that their attendance shows that they care and that they are local.

And all you’re doing is holding them to their goals and aspirations, like people did for me. I am who I am because my parents did that for me. They didn’t do that to me — they did that for me. ... Luxury beliefs are costly to attain. It’s true that in 2020 anyone on the street could have said, “Defund the police.” But you don’t automatically acquire status simply by repeating the slogan. You have to say it in a way that communicates your level of education, upbringing, and cultural capital. It’s similar to knowing a lot about wine. You might be able to fool someone momentarily by mentioning a particular vintage. But if I ask why you like that wine, you need to be able to elaborate in a certain way. The same is true of luxury beliefs. You can’t just say, “Defund the police.” If I ask why, you have to talk about interlocking systems of oppression, violence interrupters, the history of abolition and slavery, and so on. You have to be able to communicate the belief in a specific language. The only way to do that is by passing through certain institutions, having certain kinds of jobs, and being immersed in particular social environments. There is certainly a group-membership signaling component here. But the audience is primarily affluent, college-educated, credentialed people. Those are the people these signals are meant for.

I think the presenter is on to something big, but where I disagree with her is that she accuses African leaders and gives a subtle pass to African citizens. It is not true that African citizens were oblivious to what Trump or Epstein are. They knew, but they simply did not have the ability to think critically that when Trump talks about LGBT issues, it is not necessarily that he does not support them, but that he understood there is a group of foolish people out there who would buy into that rhetoric without interrogating why he was deploying it. Some of Trump’s best friends, like Peter Mandelson, are gay, yet some Africans were foolish enough to believe that Trump is anti-gay. He simply understood how human beings operate, that there are times when people fail to think, a tragic failure to think, and they just go with the flow. If you ask Africans today what they gained from the perceived homophobia that Trump projected, which we know was political theatre targeted at a particular audience, they will not be able to tell you. Trump might be many things to many people. I do not like him and everybody knows that, but the one thing I respect him for is that he understands his audience. He knows what to say when he is talking to foolish people. He knows what to say when he is talking to idiotic people. He knows what to say when he is talking to sycophants. He knows what to say when he is talking to people who do not understand the world of politics, and he gets away with it. And for that, I give it to him. He becomes a political superstar precisely because you then have black people in Africa supporting him. That in itself shows you the scale of political illiteracy that exists, where people rally behind rhetoric crafted to manipulate them, not to advance their interests.

That is, spread so much nonsense, some things that are true, some things that are false, that people just feel there’s no way to tell the difference, and so they just accept what the powerful leader says. That is, you undermine the feeling that there’s any basis to distinguish truth from falsehood. Meaning, well, then what are you going to believe? Well, believe what the leader says. Adam Boulton: And that is, you know, making common knowledge toxic to a certain extent, isn’t it? Me: Yes, it’s spreading the common belief that works in the interests of the powerful leader, the sovereign, the dictator, the chief, at the expense of the democratic principle that the government serves the interests of the people. Adam Boulton: It also seems to me that because America is so dominant and so large, that it is something that is spreading out into political discourse in other countries. You know, people talk about being like Trump, or Trump’s got a point, or things like that. Do you see that coming here? Me: Yeah, I think that is a danger. I mean, I think there were hints of that during the administration of Boris Johnson, who has been called Trump with a thesaurus. Give people an obvious way to display their rank, and perhaps they would feel less need to signal it through their opinions. I’m only partly joking. In some elite circles, openly displaying wealth is considered vulgar. But the desire for status does not disappear just because certain ways of showing it become unacceptable. People find other ways to distinguish themselves. In The Status Game, Will Storr describes three broad forms of status competition. In dominance games, people gain status through force or intimidation. Street gangs and organized crime offer clear examples. In success games, people gain status by showing competence: earning a degree, building a career, or becoming skilled at something others value. In virtue games, people compete to be seen as morally good. This last form of competition helps explain the appeal of luxury beliefs. An unusual or fashionable opinion can make someone seem both distinctive and virtuous. But seeking status through beliefs does not always cause harm. People can also gain admiration by promoting ideas that improve other people’s lives. I’m often asked whether there are any good luxury beliefs. By my definition, the answer is no. Luxury beliefs are ideas and opinions that confer status on elites while inflicting costs on everyone else. If a belief raises the status of the person expressing it and also helps others, it is not a luxury belief. There have been historical examples of elites gaining status by advancing ideas that benefit society. The question is how to encourage more of that kind of competition.
