‘It’s not clear Trump even READ the Memorandum of Understanding he signed with Iran.’ —Doug Bandow, former Special Assistant to President Reagan ‘The Iranians do have to be careful not to overreach. They hold the Strait. That gives them enormous leverage, but they need to be prepared to make a deal when they can. I think what they were worried about here was that it was pretty clear Trump was violating the MOU in terms of the Strait as well as the issue of Lebanon. Now, it's not clear that he actually read the MOU before he signed it. Did he actually know what was in it? It was somewhat ambiguous. You send over a couple of real estate developers, a childhood friend and your son-in-law and expect them to work out negotiations with Iran? What could possibly go wrong? The point is that I think he realised he was in trouble, he got a lot of flak for it and thought that he could force the Iranians to back down. They are holding firm. I think the danger here is they have to be prepared at some point, I think, to make a deal. It was a horrible deal for the United States. It was a deal where billions of dollars was given to Iran. It was a deal where 1.7 billion in cash was put on a Boeing 7, well, not a 7, 7, 57, I guess, right? But it was put on a big, beautiful Boeing 757. They needed a Boeing 747 to be honest with you, because it was a lot of cash. 1.7 billion was taken out of the banks and given to Iran, and on top of that, tens of billions of dollars was made. If that happened, Iran would almost certainly retaliate against Israel, and could also hit U.S. assets and energy infrastructure in the Gulf. At that point, America would be pulled in automatically. Not in 2026 when he possibly convinced Trump to jointly attack Iran, but when he convinced Trump in 2018 to withdraw from the then-signed agreement between President Obama and the Iranians about the nuclear program of Iran. Because what happened is that until then, Iran didn’t enrich uranium since they signed the agreement with Obama. And when America withdrew from that agreement, they started rapidly to enrich uranium up to the level of 60%, which brought them quite close to the possibility of building an atomic bomb. And that has, in a way, created the almost inevitable circumstances to launch this military attack on February of 26th. And the bottom line after this four month process is that we came back to where it started. There is an agreement between America and Iran, after a long period of closing the Strait of Hormuz, which caused serious economic damage to the international community. And we are with an agreement perhaps weaker than the one that was signed by President Obama. I don’t remember that President Obama promised to build up a fund of $300 billion to compensate Iran for the losses of the war, and I don’t know what is the difference in terms of inspecting and supervising the nuclear program other than what was until then. The Obama agreement was also based on the supervision and inspection of the nuclear program by the IAEA, the International Atomic Agency in Vienna. And that’s more or less what they agreed. Now, there is nothing about the ballistic missiles. There is nothing about, of course, the change of regime in Iran.
