The US has incredible topography! USGS recently released 1 m LiDAR elevation data covering the entire country, and their “3D Elevation as Art” series shows just how detailed it is. I used Astra/Codex to build an app where you can slide between the LiDAR elevation maps and optical imagery...

I am also currently downloading the raw 1 m datasets from the USGS to try to make a town by town elevation viewer, but the data files are massive! 500 GB to 1 TB for each state...

@USGS Beautiful! One minor bug, if you zoom way in (like to 16 m/px level), the registration between the two images needs to be fixed, as an offset appears between the LIDAR and the optical image. It's probably more prominent the more east you go in the state.

@USGS Thanks for the bug report Bill... I am seeing that now! Working on the fix. Important to get the close shots working because those are the coolest comparisons.

@USGS Cool. Also, it'd be great to support search for a particular location. There might be aspects for search and/or a topography layer that you can use from my vibe-coded TopoView. Source code:

@USGS Thanks for checking out the app Chris! yep at the local level, there is a lot of lining up to do, working on that now! Mainly caused by the slight difference in projections in the LIDAR source image and the optical imagery

Фото профиля Matt Mullin

@USGS Thanks for pointing this out, on my side the state selection looks good down through the W's but could be a dynamic scaling issue depending on the browser size. We can't have Wyoming left out of here, especially how cool it looks.

@USGS iOS + safari Bounce back to “a” works like a charm Bounce down to “bottom” ends up bouncing back to top. Just needs a second landing bounce at end of selection window to mirror the top landing bounce (split input window into 50:50 rooftop rather than slanted single roof)

@USGS Check out the geo referencing of the imagery v. lidar. The Great Salt lake/Provo lake suddenly grows mountains when to slide over it

Фото профиля Matt Mullin
Matt Mullin11 дней назад

Yeah it gets pretty buggy as you zoom in, in the process of addressing that. the problem is basically that the LIDAR source images from USGS are not georeferenced in my app, so as the scale changes it no longer lines up. Working a fix now that would not need me to store 20 TB of georeferenced LIDAR data on my personal site!

Фото профиля jose

@USGS Ahh the struggle of dealing with high quality lidar! 😅

Фото профиля Matt Mullin

@USGS tried solving the local geo-referencing on this update. Takes some extra time to load the higher res local data but works much better on the small scale.

@USGS LiDAR is also how lost cities surface under canopy. At Minanbé a Maya city’s outline arrived years before anyone walked it. The scan is the map. Dating still happens on the ground.

Фото профиля Matt Mullin
Matt Mullin11 дней назад

@USGS Thanks for pointing that out, yeah the projections between LIDAR and optical are different which creates a scaling issue. I will get the great state of North Carolina fixed. Awesome views of the estuary/tributary regions on the coast in the LIDAR image.

Thank you for posting this. Back in May I was off work for a surgery and tried downloading very high resolution elevation data from USG to import into X-Plane 12 (a flight simulator) for realistic VFR practice and the only way to get this resolution then was by compiling it from the raw LIDAR data which was too much of a PIA!

Hi Friends, for my first project created with GPT-6 Astra, I built the entire city of Seoul in 3D—a small revolution in digital geography! 😄 This interactive 3D miniature covers all of Seoul and its surrounding areas, and you can explore it yourself. It includes: • All 25 districts of Seoul and approximately 267,000 simplified building models • Rotate, zoom, and pan controls, plus an automated fly-through of 14 landmarks • Day, sunset, and night modes • Mobile touch support The buildings were generated from real-world map data, with their shapes simplified for performance. Terrain and building heights are exaggerated by 4× to make the cityscape easier to see. The entire process—from creating the project to completing deployment—took 43 minutes and 38 seconds minutes. Please note that the buildings are simplified models based on locations and footprints recorded in OpenStreetMap. Where height data is unavailable, estimated heights derived from the source data are used. The landmark models are interpretive recreations designed to emphasize their distinctive features, rather than survey-grade or photorealistic reconstructions of every building. The project is based on real road, waterway, elevation, and building data. • Maps and buildings: OpenFreeMap / OpenMapTiles / © OpenStreetMap contributors · ODbL Data snapshot: August 30, 2026 • Terrain: AWS Terrain Tiles / Mapzen · SRTM and other sources • District boundaries: southkorea/seoul-maps · Statistics Korea’s 2013 boundaries These may differ from Seoul’s current administrative boundaries. • 3D rendering: Three.js • Additional components: terrain, road, and building data, subject to their respective licenses

GeoLibre v3.0.0 is here! GeoLibre is a free and open-source, lightweight, cloud-native GIS platform for visualizing, exploring, and analyzing geospatial data. It runs everywhere you do, in the web browser, on the desktop, on mobile, and inside Jupyter notebooks, all while keeping your data local and private. This release landed 95 pull requests from 11 contributors, and 5 people made their first contribution to GeoLibre. Thank you to everyone who filed an issue, reviewed a change, or sent a patch. Our first major release makes the Cesium 3D globe a full rendering engine for the whole workspace, brings time-dynamic CZML scenes and native KML to the globe, and lets you save your edits straight back to ArcGIS Feature Services. What's new in v3.0.0 - Cesium as your main map: switch the entire workspace between MapLibre 2D and Cesium 3D from the View menu, and the choice is saved with your project. - Nearly every layer on the globe: COGs, PMTiles, MBTiles, vector tiles, ArcGIS services, I3S scene layers, LiDAR point clouds, and Gaussian splats all render in 3D, with extruded polygons and true elevation for 3D vectors. - Dynamic 3D scenes: load CZML for orbits, trajectories, and moving objects that play along the globe clock, open KML and KMZ with their original styling, and add Cesium Ion assets such as OSM Buildings by id. - Your tools work in 3D too: screenshots, print layouts, video and camera tours, the Elevation Profile, and the Sun, Atmosphere, Flight Simulator, and weather plugins. - ArcGIS write-back: edit a Feature Service layer in GeoLibre and save additions, changes, and deletions back to the service. - Editable SVG print layouts: export a layout and fine-tune the title, legend, and scale bar in Inkscape or Illustrator. - Smarter rasters and new data sources: viewport-based raster stretch, persistent layer filters from Select by Expression, a Portolan catalog browser, OGC CSW catalog search, and a USGS NLDI panel for tracing river networks. Try it out - Launch GeoLibre Web: - GitHub: - Documentation: - Release notes: #GIS #Geospatial #OpenSource #CesiumJS #3DMapping #MapLibre #GeoLibre

We are entering the age of just-in-time software. Some of my coworkers are visiting San Francisco this week, so I asked Claude Fable to design an extremely detailed HTML map of San Francisco so I can explain the city to them. The HTML is wild. It has all the street names, their exact dimensions, the relief of the city, the fog, the sun exposure etc. Everything it real. I was super surprised but it went and found the city's actual data, then built a cartographic engine around it. So I have: - Every street from the SF Public Works centerline survey: 15,905 segments, 2,502 named streets, 54,989 surveyed vertices, with the official address ranges per block - The relief from 14,151 municipal elevation contour points, interpolated into a 168,000-vertex terrain model - 9,672 buildings with lidar-measured heights from an SF Planning study - Every Muni Metro line, the cable cars and BART from the official GTFS feed: real route shapes, real 10-minute headways, real speeds. 76 little trams move on the map at their scheduled pace, and the K dims when it passes under 175 meters of Twin Peaks because it knows the tunnel portals (wtf!) - Fog modeled as marine-layer advection over the terrain, calibrated on NREL satellite irradiance and a decade of ASOS weather observations. Claude did totally overkilled stuff like the fog model's 50% line landed at longitude -122.437 which is... Divisadero Street (every San Franciscan knows the fog stops there) The whole thing is one self-contained HTML file, 1.2 MB, with a WebGL engine. No libraries, no API calls, no network. It runs offline forever. We talk about scaling and benchmarks all day. Sometimes the bitter lesson is simpler: give the machine real data and real verification loops, and it builds you the city. I'm spending the evening exploring the map; it's too good!
